Global Health Research Initiative Program for New
Foreign Investigators GRIP
20FIC-NIH Global Health Research Initiative
Program For New Foreign Investigators (GRIP)
21GRIP Purpose
- Help overcome major barriers to returning
scientists to developing countries - Increase the pool of foreign researchers
- Work on problems of local concern
- Strengthen the research infrastructure in
developing countries
22Individual Eligibility for GRIP
- Trained in the intramural program at NIH or under
Fogarty D43 training grants - Two years of training or one year of training and
one year of mentored research - From developing countries
- Returning to developing countries
- Soon to complete or recently completed (within 3
years) or training - Work done relating to scientific needs of the
country or region
23GRIP Support
- Up to maximum 50,000 per year total for maximum
5 years - Applicant must devote at least 50 effort to
project - Grant will support up to 50 salary
- Funds may be used for research equipment,
supplies, travel or other research personnel's
salary working on the same project.
24Collaborations
- Encourage collaborations with training
institution - Formal collaboration is not necessary
- Ongoing mentorship and partnership
25GRIP PROGRAM STARTED IN 2002

28R01 GRIP Grants
The number of GRIP awards will depend upon the
quality of the applications received. This
Global Research Initiative Program (GRIP)
provides the opportunity for junior foreign
scientists to compete for funds through a
peer-reviewed process. The GRIP Program allows
the continuation of promising independent
research careers that will be of benefit to the
investigators' home countries and the world at
large.
29Fogarty International Research Collaboration
Award FIRCA (R03)
- Fosters international research partnerships
between NIH-supported U.S. scientists and
collaborators in developing countries in areas of
mutual interest - Provides a stipend for the foreign investigator,

partnerships between U.S. scientists and their
collaborators in countries of the developing
world. Three years. Renewable. - U.S. scientists who have an eligible NIH research
grant may apply. - All areas of biomedical and behavioral research
supported by NIH are eligible.
31HIV/AIDS and Related Illnesses Collaboration
Award (FIRCA-AIDS)
- To foster international research partnerships
between NIH-supported U.S. scientists and their
collaborators throughout the world in all aspects
of HIV-AIDS research and new and resurgent
infectious diseases related to HIV infection - The AIDS-FIRCA program aims to enhance the U.S.
investigator's research grant while benefiting
the scientific interests of the foreign scientist
32International Training and Research Program in
Emerging Infectious Disease
- Purpose
- To foster collaborative research with regions of
the world where new or reemerging infections are
most likely to occur due to population patterns
and ecological disturbances. - Objectives
