- All nursing students complete Clinical Placements
(practicum) - Policies and procedures manuals for both
Certificate IV and BN students can be located on

- You will need to submit a Clinical Placement form
to the Clinical Coordinator available from the
Practicum page on the CDU Web - Practicum URL as per previous slide
- It is essential that ALL students read this Web

46Practicum
- All students are required to have a current
competency certificate in Cardio Pulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) prior to commencing their
practicum for 1st, 2nd 3rd year - This may be from St John Ambulance, Red Cross or
any accredited provider - Please submit a copy to the Placement Coordinator
47When will I be on practicum?
- ALL students are required to attend a Clinical
Teaching Block (CTB) prior to commencing each
practicum - It is desirable that students commence their
practicum as soon as possible following CTB, but
not always possible

- Check on Practicum URL for the dates for ALL CTB
dates and associated Practicum - Interstate students will be allocated to the 1st
CTB if there are 2 for the same unit e.g. NUR109
being conducted in Darwin or Alice Springs
49When will I be on practicum?
- CTBs will be conducted at CDU interstate
satellite centres as per the information on the
Practicum page - If any of these dates are changed, an updated
notice will be posted on the Practicum page
50Do I get a choice of where I go and when?
- Yes, you can nominate your preferences
- Be aware that not all students will receive their
1st preference - Completion should be within the semester
- Placements are organised by the Placement
Coordinator and must not be changed
51What preparation do I get before I go out on
practicum?
- Related theoretical units
- Clinical Teaching Block
- The length of CTB varies according to the
specific unit, most are of one week duration
52What do I have to do to pass a practicum unit?
- Attend 100 all Clinical Teaching Block days
- Attend 100 all Clinical Placement days
- Complete all relevant assessment tasks

54What do I wear when I am on practicum?
- University Student Nursing Polo-shirt and current
student ID - Uniform Polo-shirt is available from the Uni
Bookshop
55Do I get paid while on practicum?
- No, you cannot be paid on a placement/practicum
- Placement is part of your studies
56Dedicated Education Units
- Dedicated Education Units (DEU) were commenced in
2004 - The DEUs have an overall Coordinator
- There are currently 4 DEUs
- DPH and 3 at RDH 2A, 3A 4B
- DEUs are conducted using a Peer Support Model

- A team of students work with a Registered Nurse
for their practicum - Different year levels of students work together
- Each DEU is supported by
- Principal Academic
- Liaison Nurse
- Establishment of further DEUs may be negotiated
