Sterile Gloving Sterile Dressing Change
2
Dressing Changes
  • Clean technique
  • Closed wounds
  • Non-sterile wounds
  • Non-sterile gloves used
  • Do not touch the side of the dressing that will
be in contact with the wound

3
Dressing Changes
  • Sterile technique
  • Open surgical wounds
  • Central line dressing changes
  • Sterile gloves required (SEE SYLLABUS)
  • Be organized and think ahead of needed supplies
  • Prevent contamination

4
Dressing Supplies
  • Gauze
  • Woven-made from cotton
  • Nonwoven-synthetic fibers
  • Weave can vary
  • Can be used dry, moist, impregnanted with
    petroleum, antiseptics, other agents.
  • Choice of product will depend on a careful wound
    assessment.
  • Treatment should modified as wound changes.

5
Wet-to-Dry Dressings
  • Mechanical debridement
  • Saturate gauze with solution ordered (NS, etc.)
  • Wring until damp
  • Place over wound and secure with secondary
    dressing
  • Allow to dry and adhere to necrotic tissue
  • When dressing removed, necrotic tissue will also
be removed. However, granulating tissue will also
    be removed.

6
Non-adherent dressings
  • Curity, Mepitel, or Telfa
  • Also used as secondary dressing
  • Impregnated with petroleum, saline, or
    antimicrobials.
  • Minimal drainage allowed.

7
Transparent Dressings
  • Biocclusive, OpSite, Tegaderm
  • Semipermeable membrane permits gaseous exchange
    between air and wound.
  • Minimally absorbent.
  • Dry, noninfected wounds or wounds with minimal
    drainage.

8
Hydrocolloid
  • DuoDerm, Tegasorb
  • Waterproof, nonpermeable
  • Supports debridement
  • Superficial and partial-thickness wounds with
    light to moderate drainage.

9
Alginates
  • SeaSorb, Sorbsan, Kalfostat, Mesalt
  • Highly absorbent material made from seaweed
  • Forms gel when in contact with wound
    moisture-gentle debridement
  • Can dry out wounds
  • Moderate to heavy exudates

10
Antimicrobials
  • Iodoflex-alginate impregnated with Betadine-type
    material
  • Iodosorb-see above, but more gel-like
  • Iodoform guaze-yellow strip of fabric placed on
    surgical wound
  • Acticoat-alginate impregnated with crystalline
    silver-antibacterial and antifungal properties
