    analysis.
  • AMWA certification was not significant in model.
  • Men earn more than women, even when they have
    similar experience and education.
  • R2 0.5123, so model explains 51 of variance in

with pay (R2 0.4254 P lt 0.0001)
58
Survey Limitations
  • Response rate (45) was lower than ideal.
  • Some employers, especially at pharmaceutical
companies, instructed their employees NOT to
answer the survey, which also occurred with the
last survey. This might have suppressed average
    income in this survey.

59
How can we improve the response rate?
  • Improve publicity and provide advance notice (eg,
    mailing to entire AMWA membership)
  • Extend interval for survey participation
  • Work with AMWA employers at pharmaceutical
    companies to improve participation
  • Suggest alternate access to survey for members
who cannot access the Web site from work

60
Summary
  • Since 1993, mean income for respondents employed
by companies and organizations has increased 19
    above the level of inflation.
  • Change in freelance income is unknown because the
2001 survey did not distinguish between net and
    gross income.
  • Men generally earn more than women even when
factors such as educational level and years of
    experience are considered.

61
Acknowledgments
  • AMWA members who participated in the survey
  • Kanitha Andersen, MS for providing the
    statistical analysis of that data
