3Design
- Standard 8
- Students will develop an understanding of the
attributes of design.
- Everyone can design solutions to a problem.
- Design is a creative process.
- The design process is a purposeful method of
planning practical solutions to problems. - Requirements for a design include such factors as
the desired elements and features of a product or
system or the limits that are placed on the
design.
4Design
- Design is a creative planning process that leads
to useful products and systems. - There is no perfect design.
- Requirements for a design are made up of criteria
and constraints.
5Design
- Standard 8 continued 9-12
- The design process includes defining a problem,
brainstorming, researching and generating ideas,
identifying criteria and specifying constraints,
exploring possibilities, selecting an approach,
developing a design proposal, making a model or
prototype, testing and evaluating the design
using specifications, refining the design,
creating or making it, and communicating
processes and results. - Design problems are seldom presented in a clearly
defined form. - The design needs to be continually checked and
critiqued, and the ideas of the design must be
redefined and improved. - Requirements of a design, such as criteria,
constraints and efficiency, sometimes compete
with each other.

14The Knowledge Triangle Design
15Design Is
- Verb conceive, invent, to formulate a plan for
devise, to have as a goal or purpose intend - Noun A drawing or sketch especially a detailed
plan for construction or manufacture, the
purposeful arrangement of parts or details, the
art or practice of making designs, an ornamental
pattern, a plan or project, or a reasoned
purpose intent.
16The Design Course _at_ VU
- Lecture 2.5 months

- Product (catheter, database, pacifier )
- Process (C_at_ clinic, Oral Surgery clinic)
- Unusual (Softball, C. Elegan, Heart Fiber)
- Grand Challenge (Capstone Design)
- Oral, written, poster, device as output
17What is different about BME Design?
- Why not combine BME, EE, ME, ChE, CSE in a big
design pot?
18Answers
- It is done has value
- Potential for a complete prototype is improved
- Mimics real life
- When do you do the BME specific lecture material
how do you guarantee BME topics?
