KNM Industries Inc. is planning to
develop and operate a steel fabrication facility
in Tofield. The facility will be located on a
piece of land located between Hwy 14 and the
Airstrip on the west side of Tofield. The
facility will be the newest addition to a dozen
other similar facilities worldwide operated by
the parent company KNM Group, whose core business
involves mainly the steel fabrication of world
class process equipment and pressure vessels.
The group conforms to quality standards such as
ISO 9001 and serves major international customers
that demand quality steel assembly products.
Over the years of operation since incorporation,
KNM Group has worked in coordination with the
local government, sharing similar goals and
values going toward the protection of
environment, health and safety of the employees
and those of the neighbouring residents.
Steel fabrication includes activities such
as cutting, rolling, welding, abrasive blasting
and painting. The process of cutting and
welding steel by application of heat to form a
work piece is an old industry. Unlike industrial
plants such as chemical factories, refineries and
upgraders, steel fabrication does not produce
chemicals, hydrocarbon (liquids or gas) as end
product. Impact on environment due to steel
fabrication activities are much smaller and more
easily contained. Feasibility
studies conducted by KNM found Tofield to be the
most suitable location in comparison with a
number of other locations in the province.
Besides offering advantage of having less traffic
congestion, the town has direct access to the
sought-after heavy load corridor, which is
critical for delivery by road of large equipment
assemblies. Over the years to come, the
fabrication facility will not only create new
jobs but will also bring into the community
various tradesmen and businesses that would spin
off a supply chain of services to other new
industries in the area. The stable employment
for the people together with the attraction of
tradesmen and businesses to Tofield means we can
expect Tofield to achieve better economies of
scale for supporting greater range of amenities
and services for the township.
KNM is expecting to commence operation by the
second quarter of 2008 and plan to hold
recruitment exercise for local residents to fill
in the various positions required for the
operation. The intake will include tradesmen
such as welders, boiler makers, fitters,
cutters,QA/QC personnel, HSE personnel, material
coordinator, NDT personnel, crane and forklift
operators, foremen, signalman, truck drivers,
drafting personnel, clerical staff, storekeeper,
building manager, project managers, engineers and
inspectors of various disciplines.
