Title: Introduction to lab week 4

1
Introduction to lab week 4
  • Ex. 11-13 Integumentary, Structure of Bone, and
    Organization of the skeleton

2
Exercise 11 Integumentary
  • You are responsible for learning the organs of
the integumentary system and their functions
  • You will also explore the layers of the skin and
be able to tell the difference between them
(epidermis, dermis) note hypodermis is not a
layer of skin, but is associated with the skin
  • Youll identify the layers in the epidermis, and
the structures found in the epidermis and dermis

3
Model of skin
  • Learn the following structures
    http//www.yestheyrefake.net/skin_diagram.htm
  • Nerves
  • Adipose tissue
  • Arrector pili muscle
  • Eccrine sweat glands
  • hair shaft (above the surface), hair follicle
    (tube containing the hair)
  • Sebaceous glands-oil (sebum)
  • Basement membrane
  • Blood vessels
  • Dermal papillae
  • Epidermis, dermis, hypodermis

4
Layers of epidermis
  • Stratum corneum-outermost layer, dead keratinized
    cells
  • Stratum lucidum-clear layer of keratinocytes, not
    found in thin skin
  • Stratum granulosum-2-5 layers with dark staining
    keratohyalin granules in keratinocytes-important
    layer in waterproofing the skin
  • Stratum spinosum-many layers of keratinocytes
  • Stratum basale-single layer of cuboidal to
columnar cells, most mitosis occurs here, has
keratinocytes, melanoctyes, and Merkel cells too.

Bone structure-Ex. 12
  • For this exercise you will describe the long bone
    and identify diaphysis, epiphysis, metaphysis,
    endosteum, medullary cavity, periosteum,
    epiphyseal plate, articular cartilage, red
    marrow, yellow marrow http//homepage.mac.com/myer

    iz.html for a quiz
  • OR HERE http//classes.midlandstech.com/bio112/f
    igure7.2long20bone.htm
  • You will also distinguish between compact and
    spongy bone http//training.seer.cancer.gov/module
    _anatomy/unit3_2_bone_tissue.html

7
Osteon or Haversian system
  • Revisit the slide of the bone from last week or
    go here http//www.med.uiuc.edu/histo/large/atla
    s/objects/725.htm
  • Identify all the parts of the osteon including
  • Haversian canal or central canal
  • Lacuna containing osteocytes or osteoblasts
  • Lamella (background)
  • Canaliculi
  • http//www.trinity.edu/rblyston/bone/intro2.htm

8
Organization of the skeleton-Ex. 13
  • This week you will learn to recognize the
difference in the major bones of the human body
(there are 206 bones in the human body).
  • Youll learn the bones of the axial skeleton and
    the appendicular skeleton
  • http//training.seer.cancer.gov/module_anatomy/uni

9
Bone markings
  • Youll notice a list of bone markings on page 92
of your lab manual. Go ahead and start working
    on these too!
  • Here are the flash cards for practice.
