Title: How To Code

1
How To Code
  • Pia DiPaola
  • Psy 360L
  • Wells College
  • 2006

2
First step
  • Read over all of your
  • MEMOS
  • INTERVIEWS
  • OBSERVATIONS
  • CONCEPT MAPS

3
Second Step
  • Open up WORD
  • Create a list of themes that came up while you
were reading. For example My interviewees
talked a lot about taking action, being censored,
Friendships, Laws that effect them, Improvements
    that should be made, etc.
  • My Codes would then be things like
  • Censorship (brown)
  • Action (yellow)
  • Friendship (green)
  • Laws (blue)
  • Improvements (red)
  • Assign each code its own color (preferably
    different than the others)
  • This is a general list that WILL change, so think
    of it as a draft.

4
Working from Computer/Folder
  • Pros of each
  • Cons of each
  • This step is personal preference

5
Computer
  • Open all files
  • Create a word file for each of your codes
  • When you read through your files if you see
anything having to do with your code You
HIGHLIGHT IT the color you designated that code
    to be!
  • Copy and paste specific information from your
files onto the specific code WORD file you just
    made.

6
Folder
  • Read through your files then whenever you see an
item having to do with a code underline it with
    colored pencil.
  • After you have completed all the items relevant
in your folder create WORD documents with each
    code as a title.
  • Start copying and pasting the information onto
the computer. Or start typing it in.
  • Make sure to keep track of where you are in your
    folder.

7
Citing
  • You must site each reference to your work. You
do this by adding ()s and the following
    information
  • The individuals research name NOT THEIR REAL
    ONE!
  • Where you got the information interview, memo,
    observation, etc.
  • What page you can find the quote on.
  • (Kelly, interview 1, p. 4)
  • (PD, Memo 6, p. 2)

8
IMPORTANT
  • YOU MUST CHOOSE ONE CODE FOR EACH BIT OF
    INFORMATION.
  • In other words
  • You cant put the same quote from an interview in
    two different code sheets.
  • You have to choose only one.

9
Data Displays
  • How do your codes interact with eachother.
  • Renes Example
  • Her codes included such items as treatment,
    success, failure, medication, depression, guilt,
    etc.
  • She believes that if you succeed you are rewarded
with medication. However if you fail you only
get guilt, depression, and a few other things.
  • Her data displays might look like this

10
Success
Medication
11
Data Displays should have one per page/slide
Failure
Medication
Failure
Guilt
Depression
Failure
Guilt
Depression
12
Word Documents
  • Click on one of your code WORD documents
  • Edit Select all
  • Copy
  • Paste onto ppoint as slide
  • Each code should have one slide.
