of London - within 2 hours of all major airports
(LHR,LGW,STN) - The town is dominated by the University
Cambridge University
- Cambridge University is widely regarded
- as the UKs top University
- Consists of 33 separate Colleges founded
- over the last 800 years
Emmanuel College
- Located at very centre Cambridge
- A number of historic buildings sited in
- large and very beautiful gardens

Emmanuel College
- Founded 1583 by Sir Walter Mildmay (chancellor
- to Queen Elizabeth I) a man with Puritan
sympathies -
The US Connection
- Of the first 100 university graduates that
settled in - the colonies of New England 1/3 were from
Emmanuel - Cambridge, Massachusetts, was named after an
- Emmanuel preacher
- Another Emmanuel man John Harvard, gave his
- name to the 1st US University

nowadays visiting scholars from Harvard are
given special rights they are granted the
opportunity to make a substantial donation to
the college
4Facilities
Plenary Sessions
- will take place in the Queens building
- Excellent lecture theatre for
- about 120 people
- Currently investigated
- installation of wireless LAN
Parallel Sessions
- Many other rooms available
- but will need to book these soon
Coffee/Chill out room
- Coffee will be available in the Old Library

Registration Fee
- Small registration fee (reduced rate for Grad.
students) - - estimate 25
I have applied for a Research Grant to cover
the costs of room hire for academic
presentations
Committee Summaries deprecated the speakers
may have to cover the additional costs.
5Entertainment Program
- Cambridge has many Pubs/Cafes/Bars/Restaurants -
all - located within easy walking distance of the
centre of town
Plus (provisional plans)
- Wednesday 7th Evening reception/
- registration in the Old Library
- Thursday 8th (?) Evening, graduate
- student tour of the highlights and
- (if desired) lowlife of Cambridge
- Friday 9th Collaboration Dinner
- in the Emmanuel Hall
6Practicalities
- Web site up by the end of the week

- Please register as soon as possible !
- - I need a good estimate of numbers
- Book Hotels early !
- - the Undergraduate Hoard turns up on
Saturday - 10th (many with parents in tow)
- A list of hotels/BBs will go up on the web
- Some undergraduate-style rooms (no en suite
- facilities, etc.) will be available
(probably only for - the intrepid graduate student)
- I can promise that Cambridge is a beautiful and
historic town which is easy to explore on foot
BUT in January I cant guarantee the weather !
