2Objectives
- Develop a complete system that will stimulate,
train and measure walking. Aimed to improve
physical activities for - elderly fallers (SMILING)
- populations with movement disorders of brain
origin (CP, TBI, post-stroke) - athletes (movement quality)
- Develop a system for muscular pain relief (SWAN)
3Method
- Practical application of
- Dynamic systems theory
- Chaos theory
4Theory development 2002-2006
- Theory introduction
- Ph.D. study of Dr. Bar-Haim
- Clinical study on Cerebral Palsy
- Publication of Bar-Haim S et al. Random
perturbation A potential aid in treatment of
children with cerebral palsy. Disabil Rehabil.
2007
5Applications development
- System for treatment of children with Cerebral
Palsy - SoM-ToUR
- System for counteracting falls in the elderly
- SMILING
- System for muscular pain relief
- SWAN
- System for improvement of athletes' performance
6SoM-ToUR (Thrive on Unique Road)
7SMILING
(Self Mobility Improvement in the eLderly by
counteractING falls)
The SMILING consortium was initiated by Step of
Mind Ltd in order to implement the SoMs
theoretical and practical experience to
counteract falls in the elderly.
Grant Agreement n. 215493 FP7 IST, funded by EC
8SWAN (Smart Wearable Assistance to Neck )
- SWAN aims
- Improve working conditions of computer users
- Merging innovative theories in muscle physiology
with state-of-the-art ICT technologies - Design and develop a wearable device for
mechanical chaotic pressure/vibration
9Present status
- Experimental prototype of The System for CP
treatment clinical feasibility trials of the
system in Israel and Palestine - Key role in SMILING Consortium elderly fallers
- Pain Relief Device in co-operation with Italian
industrial company - System for improvement of athletes' performance

activities. Dr. Bar-Haim originated the idea of
applying chaotic perturbations to facilitate
motor learning and conducted preliminary studies
that suggest the effectiveness of the proposed
approach in this patient population. - Dr. Mark Belokopytov Chief Technical Officer15
