The First Trimester of Pregnancy

Features
Week 4 The placenta develops Week 6 Umbilical
cord develops, first heart beat begins, buds for
arms and legs form Week 8 elbows and feet begin
to grow, teeth develop under gums

Week 9 Bones and cartilage begin to develop, the
fingers are short and webbed Week 10 Its
moving!!! Most joints have been formed Week 11
Now considered a fetus, blood begins to circulate
between the baby and the uterus, placenta starts
to function Week 12 Fingers and toes separate,
hair and nails begin to grow, genitals take on
gender characteristics

  • Most of the organs like kidneys, liver, pancreas,
    bladder, intestines, bronchi, and skin have
    formed by the end of the first trimester

How Long?
  • Week 7 baby is 1/3 of an inch long or the size
    of a grain of rice
  • Week 12 baby is 2 inches long
  • At the end of the first trimester the baby will
    weigh approximately half of a pound

Senses
  • All sense organ have begun to form, but it will
    be many weeks before they are completed to the
    point where the baby will be able to use them

  • Week 5 embryo has three layers the ectoderm,
    endoderm, and the mesoderm and the skin remains
    transparent
  • Week 11 blood will begin to circulate in between
    the baby and the uterus
  • Week 12 kidneys begin to form and excrete urine
    and the muscles in the intestinal wall practice
    digesting food

  • 4 months the babys length is 4.5 inches
  • 5 months the babys length is 10 inches.
  • 6 months the babys length is 12 inches and
    weighs more than a 1 pound

  • Eyes and ears develop and move to their proper

  • Week 26 brain waves for sight and sound
  • Week 27 eyes start opening and retinas start
    growing

  • The eyebrows and eyelashes finish forming and
    eyes function
  • Hair on head continues to grow
  • Leg actually starts to look like a leg, a little
    bony
  • More body fat is collecting around bones
  • The arms are small but the bones are growing

  • During the third trimester of pregnancy almost
    all organs have formed
  • Only the lungs need to be developed more because
    if the baby was born now it would have a hard
    time breathing
  • By then end of the third trimester the baby is
    ready to be born because all essential organs are
    in place

  • The average weight from weeks 28-40 is 2 to 7.5
    lbs.
  • The average length from weeks 28-40 is 14.8 to 20
    inches

  • By week 32, the baby is up to 4 pounds and all
