WHAT IS CCSS?
If you are a returning student you were
probably a member of the International Student
Association (ISA) or the Multicultural Student
Union (MSU) last year. If this is your first
year at Houghton, these titles mean nothing to
you because they no longer exist. The Office of
Intercultural Affairs and the leadership of ISA
and MSU agreed that collaborating the efforts of
the two organizations would be a more efficient
means of pursuing their goals. The
Cross-Cultural Student Society aims to promote
cultural awareness and diversity on the Houghton
College campus by bringing together students from
countries scattered all over the globe. The CCSS
also serves to help
international students in their transition from
their countries of origin to the United States.
Under the advisement of Peter Amos, the CCSS is
lead by a cabinet that meets on a weekly basis to
plan and organize the events and activities for
this academic year. Over the course of the year
we desire to expand your minds by revealing to
you aspects of the many cultures of the world.

Yellow Tulips The Question of Beauty by Diane
Wakoski Did she ever get her hands dirty? Well,
probably, yes. That surely isn't the issue it's
whether or not she ever had to look in the mirror
and recognize an awkward face, dumpy features,
unshapely arms? And then, why wouldn't she still
want the same things, everyone wants, beautiful
or ugly? It all comes down to equality. And maybe
no one ever steadies the balance for long. I want
her to lose something for her beautiful face,
whereas she simply wants to beat me because she's
better, or is it more beautiful? She wants it all
and will get it. Two cardinals, a blue jay, some
purple finches and a lot of non-descript
sparrows. After all, which birds do you prefer to
come to your feeder? And why do the neighbors'
tulips always look so much better than ours?
has published more than twenty collections of
poetry, the most recent being THE EMERALD CITY
OF LAS VEGAS (Black Sparrow Press 1995). "The
Butcher's Apron" from this collection appears in
THE BEST AMERICAN POETRY 1996.

Although she may be a new face to many Houghton,
there are those of us who consider Janet Wagner
an old friend. Janet, a native of Monterrey,
Mexico, came to Houghton Academy in 1994 as a
sophomore. After she graduated in 1997, she
decided to pursue her education back home at El
Instituto Tecnologio y de Estudios Superiores de
Monterrey. Now Janet is back as an International
Studies major and she hopes to pursue a career in
the United States upon graduating.
NCMSLC? The CCSS cabinet is looking forward to
attending the National Christian Multicultural
Student Leadership Conference at Messiah College
November 4-6. The NCMSLC is a great opportunity
for this years cabinet to attend workshops and
group sessions pertaining to the purpose of the
CCSS. If you have career interest in the area of
International or Intercultural Affairs this
retreat may be appealing to you as well. For

Police shut down worship Turkish police,
accompanied by the crew of a private TV channel,
disrupted the worship services of an established
Christian fellowship in Izmir, arresting 40
adults worshipping in what officials claimed was
an "illegal" church. Eyewitnesses told news
agency Compass that some 20 intruders stormed
into the Izmir Fellowship of Jesus Christ on 12
September. Half of them were plainclothes
policemen, together with reporters, photographers
and cameramen from Star TV and its sister tabloid
newspaper, Star. Free speech under threatA
conference planned by radical Islamist group,
Al-Muhajiroun, at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday
(19 September) was dramatically cancelled by the
venue just a few days before the event. The
rally, which was to have featured a debate
between Al-Muhajiroun leader Omar Bakri Muhammad
and evangelist Jay Smith, aimed to explore what
Britain would be like as an Islamic state or
Khilafah(Caliphate). Al-Muhajiroun tried to
obtain a High Court injunction for the rally to
go ahead, but a technicality prevented the judge
from granting it.
CCSS Meeting If you think it would be
interesting to learn about the backgrounds of the
international students here at Houghton then you
are in luck. The CCSS is planning to host a
dinner-discussion time once a month where you
will have the opportunity to learn about one of
the many cultures represented on our campus. For
our first meeting, Tuesday, October 5 at 530 pm
in the Alumni dining room, Shelly Bend will be
sharing a little bit about her life growing up in
Barbados. We hope to see you there!!!

John Osae-Kwapong Providing Leadership On
Diversity Hush, Not So Loud. This was the
title of a one hour session on diversity
facilitated by Dr. Michael Lastoria during the
Student Government Fall 99 retreat. The idea to
title the session the way I did emerged from one
of the many matters arising as I launched my
campaign for the SGA Presidency. Having decided
to make diversity at Houghton one of my big
issues, it was brought to my attention that it
was very important that I toned down my rhetoric
on the issue. Was my success at the polls
contingent upon where I placed diversity on the
list of my campaign priorities? It seemed so
especially when the hearts and minds of the
people whose votes I sought were in strong
agreement that issues relating to race, culture
and ethnicity were and are a non-issue at
Houghton College. However, after an electoral
victory it behooves upon me to bring the SGA to
the point where we can and should provide
leadership on the issue with the hope that the
silences will be broken and improvement realized
in the celebration of Houghtons diversity
irrespective of the size of our international
students and minority population. Below is our
plan for the issue as it relates to our overall
vision for the year. A. We will lay a solid
foundation for the present and future SGA
administration to play a major role in diversity
related initiatives. B. We will
strengthen and put in place support systems that
will enable us to better celebrate diversity. C.
We will clearly define our message and objectives
regarding diversity. D. Through a campaign of
awareness, the culture of silence engulfing
diversity will begin to witness a slow but
significant meltdown.

Happy Birthday!
Its Never too Late to Celebrate We may not be
in sync with the national calendar, which marks
September 15October 15 as Hispanic Heritage
month. Yet, were not going neglect acknowledging
the strong prevalence of Hispanic culture in our
society today. According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, the Hispanic population is estimated to
be 29.2 million people, approximately 10.9
percent of the total population(6/1/97). For a
fact closer to home, the Hispanic/
Hispanic-American minority group is the largest
existing group on our campus. The CCSS is
planning to host an event focusing on
Hispanic-American culture in the later part of
the month. Look for more information about this
event on the CCSS bulletin board located in the
basement of the Campus center.

STUDENT PROFILE Student Profile Paulo
Goque When I sat down to talk with Paulo, the
first words out of his mouth were, Houghton is a
special place. He goes on to explain that
coming here to study and to play soccer was a
journey of faith. This journey of faith
started in 1997 when Paulo made contacts with
Coach Hornibrook to play soccer for Houghton.
Because his country, Mozambique, was recovering
from the devastation of war he was unable to come
to the US. Paulo recalls coach telling him that
the Lord will provide a way to bring him to
Houghton if that is His plan. God has been
faithful in bringing him here this year. Fun

Romans 837-9(NIV) No, in all these things we
are more than conquerors through Him who loved
us. For I am convinced that neither death nor
life, neither angels nor demons, neither the
present nor the future, nor any powers, neither
height nor depth, nor anything else in all
creation, will be able to separate us from the
love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Amidst the hectic nature of this season, Dr.
Chamberlain kindly agreed to share with us. As
we enter the new millennium, Dr. Chamberlain
encourages us as Christians to mirror what
Christs kingdom is about a society with respect
for people. The Gospel of Matthew is a perfect
example of how we should interact with others as
if there were no boundaries for ethnicity or
culture. The body of Christ should aim to have
an international dimension and therefore rise
above petty prejudices. With joy and optimism,
President Chamberlain looks forward to the future
yet realistically acknowledges the continued
secularization of this nation.
