3????WHO WE ARE
- Non-profit corporation affiliated with the
University of Saskatchewan, incorporated in 1991 - Operate 280 sow farrow-to-finish research herd
(PSCI) and a 600 sow farrow-to-finish research
herd, off-site unit and feed mill (PSCE) - Total staff complement of 50 (42 PSCI 8 PSCE),
including 4 Research Scientists, 3 Managers, 4
Research Assistants, 9 graduate students
- Research disciplines nutrition, engineering and
applied ethology
4?????WHAT WE DO
- Develop practical, new information for
application by the pork industry to improve
profitability, maintain global competitiveness
and address important sustainability issues in
animal welfare and the environment - Transfer this information to the pork industry
using a variety of vehicles to achieve adoption
and application as quickly as possible
- Maintain close working relationship with all
sectors of the pork industry, as this is who we
serve and this is the reason for our existence
5?????HOW WE DO IT
- Emphasize strategic planning and management, thus
maintaining focus in all that we do - Recognize that research is a means to an end, not
an end unto itself - Place a very high emphasis on people, attracting
and retaining nationally and internationally
recognized scientists and managers
- Listen to the pork industry, seek its guidance
and act on what we hear - Treat technology transfer as an integral part of
research, not a separate activity, and an
important vehicle for two-way communication
between researchers and our customers

15???? SUMMARY OF OPERATIONS
- Staff complement of 50 FT and PT
- Despite the substantial growth since 1993 in
revenues (261) - Growth in research revenues (184)
- Growth in total staff compliment (227)
- There has been no increase in core staff FTEs
16- ????1 Strategic Goal 1 To meet the technology
needs of the pork industry by developing
original, practical information that ensures
maximum profitability combined with acceptability
of the industry and its products
17????RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
To increase net income by 2 per pig sold
- To increase net income through the development of
feeding programs that emphasize economic
efficiency and final product quality. - To maximize the economic value gained from
feeding locally-available ingredients and
ingredient fractions by characterizing and
modifying their nutritional and functional
characteristics. - To increase net income by developing housing
systems that optimize pig performance considering
both construction and operating costs.
18????RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
To address sustainability issues related to
animal welfare and the environment.
- To ensure that the animal care and welfare
interests of pigs, producers and the marketplace
are met in a productive and profitable manner
through the development of acceptable housing and
management systems and practices. - To improve indoor air quality through the
development of economical and practical
techniques ensuring the health and safety of barn
workers and animals. - To reduce odour and gas emissions or improve
nutrient and water management by developing
in-barn operating systems and management
procedures that ensure the long-term
environmental sustainability and acceptability of
pork production.
