Authors Purpose Mildred D. Taylor wrote this
book to inform young people of how it was when
there was segregation. A lot of people today
dont understand the hardships of being treated
unfairly because of the color of their skin.
Even though it is not as common, the world is
full of racial discrimination. The Logan
children and their family dont agree with these
problems. They think it is very wrong and want
things to change.

Why did Mildred Taylor make that ending?

• She created this ending to sum up all of the
  struggle that went on during the story. All
  though not all of the problems were solved, she
  gave you some hint of what was going to happen
  next. For what she didnt hint she most likely
  wanted you to use your imagination to finish the
  story. She wanted you to choose what happened to
  T.J., and if the Logans kept their land.
