Title: The Regency Period In Brighton

1
The Regency Period In Brighton
2
Kemp Town
  • Thomas Reed Kemp thought of a scheme. Houses in
  • Brighton were not elegant enough for the truly
affluent. Kemp financed architects Charles Busby
and Amon Wilde to design the original Kemp town
estate in open country to the east of Brighton.

3
Royal Pavilion
  • The Royal Pavilion was a former seaside residence
of King George lV. During the first world war,
the Royal Pavilion complex was used as a military
hospital for wounded soldiers. Between 1914 and
1916 over 4,000 Indian patients passed through
    the hospital.

4
The Theatre Royal
  • In 1807 the Theatre Royal opens its doors for the
first time. The Theatre Royal opened properly in
1884. In 1992 the Victorian era auditorium was
restored. There were 460 seats in the entire
    theatre.

The Victorian Period In Brighton
6
The 1841 Railway
  • The railway in 1841 was designed by David Mocatta
the famous lacy iron work, matched by the design
of the street lights, all dates from this later
    period.

7
The West Pier
  • The west pier was built in 1866 and collapsed
fairly recently in 2002.The Victorians loved
    visiting the seaside.
  • Their new steam railways made it easier to get
there. Brighton (Brighthelmstone) was one of the
    most popular seaside towns.

8
The Volks Railway
  • The Volks railway opened in August 1883 in
Brighton. It was the first electrified line in
the country, for this reason alone, the history
of this famous little rail is well worth
remembering. The inventor was Mangus Volks.

9
Conclusion
  • We think the Victorian period had the most impact
on Brighton because they invented the railway and
    the west pier.
