3.1. Technical Information
Using the trade name IRODUR Huntsman offers a
range of polyisocyanates for the crosslinking of
solution grade adhesives. The IRODUR grades are
highly reactive to both water and hydroxyl
compounds. When used with the IROSTIC adhesives
they can be used to to improve the heat
stability, hydrolysis resistance and the
resistance to greases, oils and solvents of the
IROSTIC adhesive film.

The IRODUR systems, when used as a primer, may
also be used to enhance the adhesion to many
materials, particularly rubber in a variety of
different compositions.

- Product Selection
- IRODUR F318, because of its outstanding adhesion
promotion, can be used for bonding a wide
variety of different sole materials such as PVC,
rubber, EVA and leather. In addition, the
IRODUR F318 grades when used in combination with
suitable adhesives, shows only a slight
tendency to discoloration even on exposure to
light. - IRODUR E330 is a system designed for general
cross-linking applications. - IRODUR E359 is used above all where particularly
high demands are made on the durability and
strength of the bond.
- If using the IRODUR system with an IROSTIC
adhesive system the IROSTIC system should be
dissolved in a closed dissolver. The time
required depends on the solvent used and on the
construction features of the equipment. It is
recommended to strain the finished solution. If
fillers have been added to the system then added
straining may be essential. The IRODUR system is
then added at the correct level to the IROSTIC
adhesive solution and throughly mixed to ensure
good dispersion of the cross-linking agent. The
adhesive/cross-linker solution may be applied to
the prepared (roughened, solvent wiped) surface - Manually via brush, roller, spatula
- Mechanically via roller, knife, spray gun or air
gun - The adhesive surface should be applied onto both
surfaces. The surfaces are then air dried until
the solvent has evaporated. Depending on the
quantity applied this takes between 30-60
minutes. A frequent cause of poor adhesion is
insufficient drying. The dry surfaces are then
pressed together following the required
activation procedure to obtain a stable bond. - Where IROSTIC is used with an IRODUR system, the
pot life must be taken into account. Even at room
temperature the cross-linking reaction starts the
moment the cross-linking agent is added to the
adhesive solution. The viscosity of the solution
gradually increases until, after 8 to 12 hours,
the adhesive has solidified beyond spreading
consistency.

3.2. Solvent Systems
- The choice of solvents is of great importance
since both evaporation rate and viscosity of the
finished adhesive are linked to the solvent used.
In addition, when using the IRODUR cross-linkers
it is especially important that solvents used
should be free from water and alcohol (below
0.1). It is also important to control the
ingress of moisture into the final adhesive /
cross-linker system. - The following solvents may be used
- Ketones
- Acetone, Methyl ethylketone (MEK)
- Ester
- Methylacetate, ethylacetate, butylacetate
- Aromatics
- Toluene
- It is recommended that the following solvents /
materials are not used as part of the adhesive
system, when using an IRODUR cross-linker - Alcohols
- Ethanol, propanol and other common alcohols
- Acids
3.3. Storage Information
All the IRODUR products must be stored in a cool
and dry place in the original sealed packaging.
Under adequate conditions a minimum stability of
6 months may be expected.
