5Facts about Saturn
- Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun.
- In Roman Mythology, Saturn is the god of
agriculture. - Orbit 1,429,400,000 km (9.54 AU) from sun.
- Diameter 120,536 km (equatorial)
- Mass 5.68e26 kg
6More Facts
Like Jupiter, Saturn is about 75 hydrogen and
25 helium with traces of water, methane, ammonia
and rock, similar to the primordial Solar
Nebula from which the solar system was
formed. Saturns interior is similar to
Jupiters consisting of a rocky core, a liquid
metallic hydrogen layer and a molecular
hydrogen layer. Traces of various ices are also
present. Saturn, the second most massive planet,
and the most distant planet known to ancient is
one of the most beautiful sites in the Solar
System, as witnessed by the adjacent image. The
most striking feature of Saturn is the
spectacular ring system.
7Saturns Ring System
The rings of Saturn were discovered by Galileo in
1610 using the first telescope. Two separate,
discontinuous ringlets were found in the A-ring
gap, known as Enckes gap, about 73,000
km (45,000 miles) from Saturns cloud tops. At
high resolution, at least one of the ringlets
has multiple strands. Saturns F-ring was
discovered by Pioneer 11 in 1979.
8More about Saturns Rings
Photos of the F-ring taken by voyager 1 showed
three separate strands that appear twisted or
braided. The twists are believed to originate in
gravitational perturbations caused by one of the
two shepherding satellites, Prometheus (1980S27).
Clumps in the F-ring appear uniformly
distributed around the ring every 9,000 km (5,600
miles), a spacing that very nearly coincides
with the relative motion of the F-ring particles
and the interior shepherding satellite in one
orbital period.
9Saturns Satellites
- Atlas
- Prometheus
- Epimetheus
- Janus
- Helene
- Dione
- Tethys
- Telesto and Calypso
10Facts about Saturns Satellites
Titan is the largest of Saturns satellites. It
is the second largest satellite in the solar
system, and the only one know to have a
dense atmosphere. The innermost satellite, Atlas,
orbits near the outer edge of the A-ring and is
about 40by20 km (25by15miles) in size. The next
satellite outward, Prometheus, shepherds the
inner edge of the F-ring and is about 140by100 by
80 km (90 by 60 by 50 miles) in size. Next is
Pandora, the outer shepherd of the F-ring and is
110 by 90 by 80km(70by 55 by50 miles) in size.
Next are Epimetheus and Janus, which about the
same orbit--91,000km (56,600 miles) above the
clouds. One new satellite Helene, shares the
orbit of Dione, about 60o ahead of its larger
companion, and is called Dione Trojan.
11More Facts on Saturns Satellites
Two more satellites are called Tethys Trojans
because they circle Saturn in the same orbit.
They are Telesto ( the leading Trojan) and
Calypso ( the trailing Trojan). Other satellites
among Saturn are Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione,
and Rhea which are approximately spherical in
shape and appear to be composed mostly of water
and ice.
12Saturns Atmosphere
- Saturns atmosphere contains hydrogen, helium and
methane. - The temperature on Saturn is extreme it is (-180
degrees Celsius).
