Title: Step Two: Gather information
1Step Two Gather information
- Applying the skills you learned during the
Build-A Search presentation to find articles
using Academic Search Premier, a periodical index
2Find articles (and more) using an index
- Some of the periodical indexes include citations
(title, author, magazine name, volume and issue)
for articles from hundreds of different
magazines, journals and newspapers - Some of the periodical indexes include citations
for the articles AND the full-text of the article - the word periodical refers to publications
that are - published at fixed intervals like daily,
weekly, or monthly
3Andjust to be very confusing
- Some of the indexes contain information from
sources other than periodicals! Some contain
citations or full-text for information from
government sources, conference proceedings, or
even books
4Which periodical index?
- At most libraries, there are several different
periodical indexes from which to choose when
searching for information in magazines, journals
and newspapers. - At UOIT, weve created guides to help you
identify the most useful indexes for each subject
area

6Scroll through the lists of subjects until you
find one that represents your topic.
7Select the link to e-journals, magazines,
newspapers and more
8Indexes are listed in alphabetical order, not by
order of importance!
9Major indexes, other indexes
- Read the descriptions for ALL of the indexes, and
select the one that best matches your needs - See also the multi-disciplinary indexes theyre
often a good starting point for your article
searches - The periodical index Im going to use in this
presentation is a multi-disciplinary index
10Academic Search Premier
- This is a good place to start for many subjects,
because it is multi-disciplinary (covers subjects
from art to zoology), big, and fairly easy to use - The following slides show you how to access this
database
