Title: PYGMY

1
PYGMY
  • The Twa, a subgroup of the African Pygmies, are
slightly larger than most pygmies. Adult males
average 5 ft and 100 lb. The Twa, the earliest
settlers of this area, originally lived off the
land as hunters and gatherers in the once
extensive forests around the Virunga Mountains.

The Pygmies
  • This Pygmy woman is food outside her hut, with
her baby cradled on her back. Mbuti and Baka
Pygmies live in the rainforests of Central
America.  Traditionally they live by hunting and
    gathering food.

HUTU
  • The Hutu are related to the Bantu tribes of
Central and East Africa. They are typically
larger than the Twa--adult males average 5 ft, 5
inches and 130 lbs. They also, in general, have
    dark skin and stocky builds.

5
Hutu Woman
  • A Rwandan Hutu refugee woman listens as other
refugees demand they receive food at the Keza
    refugee camp near Ngara, Tanzania.

6
Hutu Children
  • Hutu Children at Kinsangani transit camp.

7
The Tutsi
  • The Tutsi differ from both the Twa and the Hutu
in physical appearance they are taller, thinner,
and lighter-skinned. Adult males average 5 ft, 9
inches and 120 lb and height over 6 ft is
    admired.

Genocide
12
Death of Tutsi
  • In 1994 the Rwandan Hutu government launched a
systematic genocide of their minority Tutsi
citizens. In four months, government forces and
militia likely murdered 750,000, possibly even
1,000,000, Tutsi and Hutu reluctant to join in
    the slaughter.

13
Genocide
  • Unknown soldier killing a person from other
    ethnic group

16
Death of Tutsi
  • Partial remains and personal belongings still
litter the floor of Ntarama Church, south of
Kigali. Around 5,000 Tutsis were killed at the
    spot in April of 1994

17
Hutu Woman
  • A Hutu woman, 40, pulls aside her clothing to
reveal the scars left after she was raped and
stabbed by Tutsi soldiers. Her husband was
abducted and killed and their home set on fire
with their six children inside. Five died.

18
Fleeing of HUTU
  • In July of 1994, the Rwandan Patriotic Front
captured the capital city, Kigali. The government
collapsed and a ceasefire was declared. Around
two million Hutus fled the country to the Congo
(then called Zaire) when it was evident that the
    RPF was victorious

19
Hutu Prisoners
  • Ethnic Hutu prisoners look out from behind the
bars. The Rwandan government went ahead on April
24 with the execution of 22 prisoners, the first
convicts found guilty in the killing of 800,000
Tutsis and moderate Hutus in a three-month period
    in 1994.

20
  • Hutu had tried to flee further away from Rwanda,
into Tanzania, but had been turned back by
Tanzanian soldiers. Several of the refugees said
they would walk all the way to Kenya or Malawi
just so they could avoid returning to Rwanda

21
Kibumba Camp
  • Thousands of Rwandan refugees die daily of
cholera, dysentery, and starvation. French Army
tractors pile the bodies up against mounds of
volcanic lava and then cover them with earth.
Death has become a management problem.

22
In 100 days an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 died
in a brutal struggle for political power.
