3What is nestor?
- nestor is
- the German Network of Expertise in long-term
STOrage of digital Resources in Germany - a cooperative project of libraries, archives and
museums as well as of leading experts forming a
network of expertise in long-term preservation
and long-term availability of digital resources.
4Goals and mission
- Mission
- To secure the preservation of digital resources
in Germany - To work with others internationally to secure our
digital memory and knowledge base - nestor is funded by the German Ministry of
Education and Research (BMBF) - The funding amounts to approx. 1,500,000 EUR
September 2006 to August 2009
5Tasks of nestor
- to make available expertise and information
- to make co-operation possible
- to present models of procedures and best
practices - to establish standards
- to raise awareness
- to disseminate the aims of long-term preservation
- to prepare a sustainable future organization

10Digital long-term preservation Presentation of
the results of an online-survey at the
Georg-August University of Göttingen
11The online-survey
- Introduction
- Results of the online-survey
- Findings and conclusions
12Organizational structures of the University of
Göttingen
- Approx. 25.000 students
- 13 faculties, covering the full scientific
spectrum - Some related institutions like
- Max-Planck Institutes
- German Primate Center
- joint computer center GWDG (Gesellschaft für
wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbh Göttingen)
13Goals and tasks of the online-survey
- Examination of
- Awareness and needs for digital preservation at
university level - Legal requirements, agreements, etc.
- Affected formats and the amount of formats
- Metadata use and needs
- Current practice and structures
14The realization of the online-survey in
spring/summer 2007
- Recipients
- More than 4.000 staff members
- Return ratio
- 291 responses
15Results of the online-survey
16Is your department interested in LTP of digital
data?
Are there any plans for LTP of digital data in
your area?
- General statements
- Approx. 80 are interested in digital long-term
preservation (LTP), but in contrast. - only approx. 12 are planning LTP-measures in
the future.
17Do you know about any legal requirements
agreements, etc. regarding digital preservation
in your area?
- the knowledge of mandatory policies
- More than three-fourths replied that they dont
know about legal requirements and agreements
the knowledge of mandatory policies is not very
widespread.
18Are the data which should be preserved in
standard formats? Are the formats well known and/
or documented in the subject community?
- Data formats
- It seems that between half and nearly two-third
of the data are in a "well known" formats (e.g.
PDF, TXT, PPT) - There is a huge variety of formats. In total, 96
different formats were mentioned at the
University of Göttingen. - Several proprietary formats are in use.
19Are there any technical metadata about the data?
- Technical metadata
- Data and digital objects dont contain metadata
in the majority of cases.
20Are there any descriptive or administrative
metadata about the data?
- Descriptive and administrative metadata
- Approx. 46 of the respondents said, that the
data contain descriptive and administrative
metadata.
21Timeframes for digital preservation
22By which means do you or your staff members
currently ensure the availability of your / their
data?
- Current measures
- Often staff members themselves are responsible
for their data - In case of leaving the department, the staff
often has to explain where/how he or she stored
the data. - A long-time preservation of digital data is not
given
23Findings and conclusions
24findings and first conclusions
- There is a huge interest in digital
preservation...but as for now there is little
planning. - The knowledge of mandatory policies is not very
widespread, less than a quarter of the
respondents know about it... - There is a general lack of metadata Most files
don't have technical metadata... descriptive
metadata is often missing, too. - The metadata used are often not standardized.
- The formats in use are very heterogeneous and
often not well documented. - In most cases the staff is responsible for
preserving the data...only a few departments have
policies concerning digital preservation. - A sustainable practice and a sustainable policy
are missing!!!
25The Project KoLaWiss
Cooperative long-term preservation for centers
of science and research http//kolawiss.uni-goet
tingen.de/
26Cooperative long-term preservation for centers
of science and research
- Goals and tasks
- Collection of data that are generated at
different scientific institutions - Classification of these data in categories (e.g.
legal or technical) - The long-term preservation of primary digital
data is examined regarding the topics of legal
questions, technical issues, costs, organization
and promotional issues - Concepts for sharing competences and tasks
- Development of business, cost and accounting
models - The results of this study at the University of
Goettingen will be generalized for other centers
of science and research

34- Finally we would like to ask you some questions!
- Are there any policies concerning LTP in your
university/company? - What could be a way to implement policies in
your department/ university? - Do these policies affect your daily
scientific/professional work? - What do you think about the awareness concerning
LTP in your company/university? - What kind of experience have you gained (e.g.
access to data and metadata, legal problems
etc.)?
