2What is an Arterial?
3Have you seen a sign like this?
- What type of sign is this?
- How do you know?
- What information is it telling you?
- What should you be predicting?
4Objectives After todays lesson, you will be
able to
- Define the word arterial.
- Determine when a turn signal is required in
traffic. - Predict driving conditions and hazards when
driving on arterial and non-arterial streets. - Determine speed limits on city streets
5OK. Lets turn these objectives into questions
that you can answer as we go along. For example
Define the word arterial. Can be changed
into a question like
What is an arterial?
6Nowgo ahead and turn the other objectives into
questions you can answer.
- Define the word arterial. (What is an
arterial?) - Determine when a turn signal is required
- in traffic.
- 3. Predict driving conditions and hazards when
- driving on arterial and non-arterial streets.
- 4. Determine speed limits on city streets.
When you hear a sound effect, that is your cue
to write out an answer to your questions.
7What is an Arterial?and why should you care?
- Approaching this
- intersection, you ask
- your instructor Which
- way do you want me to
- go? Your instructor
- says, Stay on the
- arterial.
- So What do you do?
8Where did the word arterial come from?
What is an artery?
A main blood vessel.
So, what do you think an arterial is?
A main road!
Are you ready for the complete definition?..
9What is an Arterial? An arterial is
- 1) a main road
- 2) with markings that separate lanes (paint
stripes, turtles, etc.) - 3) and always has controlled intersections

11When is a turn signal required in traffic?
- A turn signal is required anytime you leave your
present lane in order to enter a new lane, road,
driveway, parking lot, etc. - Buthow do you know which way to signal?

13What driving conditions and hazards can you
predict on an arterial street?
- Speed limit?
- Types of intersections?
- Types of Traffic Controls?
- Traffic Flow?
- Hazards?
Arterial
14What driving conditions and hazards can you
predict on a non-arterial street?
- Speed limit?
- Types of intersections?
- Types of Traffic Controls?
- Traffic Flow?
- Hazards?
Non-Arterial
15Speed Limit Laws
- What is the speed limit on a city street in
Washington State unless otherwise posted? - 25 mph
16Speed Limits on Arterials
- What would the speed limit be on the street with
the line markings, unless otherwise posted?
- 25 mph. Higher speeds are allowed on arterials
- only when posted, or by city ordinance!
17Seattle Arterials
- What is the speed limit on an arterial street
in Seattle unless otherwise posted? - 30 mph.
- Seattles ordinance code designates 30 mph as the
arterial speed, unless otherwise posted.
18The city of Seattle has a special ordinance for
speed limits on arterials
19But, of course, the Basic Speed Law takes
precedence. Regardless of the speed limit
- You may never exceed a speed that is safe for the
conditions. - Conditions means
- Traffic, weather, road surface, traction,
visibility,vehicle condition (tires,weight) road
hazards, etc. etc. etc.
20For example, the speed limit on these two roads
is 25 mph.Butwould that be safe for the
conditions?
21- Remember, state law
- requires that ANY
- street with a speed limit
- greater than 25 mph
- MUST be designated
- as an arterial.
- Do you think this street
- is in Seattle?
- Does the speed limit
- change when you
- reach the school sign?
22A few more facts about arterials
- Arterials are also known as through streets.
- That means they have the right-of-way over the
residential streets. - Vehicles on the arterial may keep going
through, while vehicles crossing from the
residential streets must yield. (They have stop
or yield signs) - When two arterials cross at an intersection, they
are usually controlled by a traffic light or
4-way stop.

30What kind of a sign might the driver of the blue
car see as she approaches this intersection?
31Lets review our objectivesCan you answer these
questions?
- What is an arterial?
- When is a turn signal required in traffic?
- What driving conditions and hazards can we
predict when driving on arterial and non-arterial
roads? - How can we determine speed limits on city streets?
