• Bartolome Ferrello became the very first explorer
  to see the only coast of Oregon in 1542.
• The first explorer that was from Spain was the
  first to see the Pacific Northwest lands.
• Some of the states were once Spanish lands
  likeFlorida, California, Arizona, Colorado,
  Nevada, and all of Central America.

Explorers from other countries came to claim
lands off America in huge ships such as the ones
at the left. Some names of these explorers are
Christopher Columbus, George Vancouver and James
Cook.

One famous explorer was captain James Cook.
Captain Cook learned about Northwest resources.
Cook learned that Sea Otter furs could be sold in
China for good prices. Explorers from other
countries claimed much of the land we now call
Washington State. They were a big part of our
history!!!

Sacajawea helped Lewis and Clark get
food and horses by trading with her tribe, the
Shoshone. President Thomas Jefferson asked Lewis
and Clark to explore this land and to write
about the things they saw.

1804. One year later Lewis and Clark bought a
huge piece of land.

Saint Louis, Missouri. From there, they and a
group of men traveled up the Missouri river in a
boat.

ago. Fur trading was very popular in the
Northwest.

with Natives for sea otter furs.They also hunted
other animals for their furs.

The Hudson's Bay headquarters were called Fort
Vancouver.
The people that lived at Fort Vancouver would
raise more food than they could eat and would eat
and then they sold the rest.

The Fort of Vancouver was almost like a small
city in Vancouver.
There was also very vast farmlands.
The Fort was just a group of buildings itself.

Mountain Men
The most famous fur traders in United States
history were the mountain men.These daring
independent trappers generally lived and worked
alone.They traveled through the Rocky Mountains
without maps or roads to guide them.

Everyday, the mountain men set their traps.
Sometimes they traveled many miles in one day to
check them.They cleaned and dry the skin of
beavers they caught.The mountain men work until
the heavy snow of winter then they found shelter.
