Title: Brown California Pelican

1
Brown California Pelican
  • Amanda little
  • Mrs.Boccaleri

2
Characteristics
  • He is not endangered.
  • They have strict diets.
  • They often get fish hooks stuck in their feet.
  • Pelicans can live up to 43 human years.
  • Less than 30 of the hatchlings survive.

3
Habitat
  • It live on coasts, beaches, and bays that are on
Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts. They are
    rarely seen inland.

4
Predator/Prey
  • It hunts fish, Menhaden account for 90-95 of
their food. They also prey on pigfish, pinfish,
    herring, sheephead, silversides, mullet, grass
and top minnows, and they sometimes eat
crustaceans, usually prawns. Though an adult
pelican requires as much as 4 lbs of fish a day,
they have been shown to not compete with
commercial or sport fisherman, as they don't eat
the same "quality" of fish as humans do. a shark
may attack and raccoons may steal the eggs. Man
is the only real danger. Of all the Brown
Pelicans brought into the Pelican Mans Bird
Sanctuary, 90 are injured by fishing line -and
    fishing hooks.

5
Predator/Prey
  • . Too often, when a fisherman snags a Pelican,
they cut the line. This then gets tangled around
the birds legs and wings and the bird can get
caught up in the branches of trees. If this
happens, the bird will starve to death. Other
problems they faces are oil spills, cars, boats,
power lines and pesticides. In the 1970s, the
Brown Pelican was declared an endangered species
by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service because their
numbers were decimated by the use of the
insecticide DDT. DDT leached into the water
supply, and therefore the fish, resulting in the
birds laying eggs with so thin that they broke
    before being incubated.

6
Poem
  • These birds might get stuck in a fish line or
have a hook in their foot but sometimes they can
be saved but sometimes they can not. It might
have been endanger in the 1970s but now it is
not. This magnificent bird might look weird but
thats the way they are. A ponderous dark water
bird this bird isnt afraid like we are he may
take a risk and swim all the way with the mean,
lean, and crool alligators, crocodiles, or the
    sharks.
