25
Selective Listening
  • Open your paper to find out who you are
  • Listen to the story
  • Take notes to plan actions for your character

26
  • A large house is nestled in an upscale
neighborhood, trimmed with a low stone wall and
an iron gate. The house showcases a large
manicured lawn with flower beds and shade trees.
The house sits at the end of long paved driveway.
Tall sculpted bushes shade the front of the house
and tall trees shade the large back yard equipped
with a pool, tennis court and basketball courts,
and tree house. The three car garage hold vintage
and SUV vehicles as well as four wheelers and two
    jet skis.

27
  • The neighborhood is quiet. Cars exit the garage
early in the morning and return late at night. A
few children ride around the streets on their
bikes, slipping in and out of their unlocked rear
home doors. Few pets are seen. There are no dogs.
  • The home inside showcases pristine white
carpet with fashionable furniture that looks as
though no one has ever sat on it. Crystal and
silver collectibles are showcased in large glass
cabinets with attractive lighting. State of the
art electronic equipment exhibiting the latest
technology is scattered throughout the home.
There are flat screen TVs, electronic game
equipment, sound equipment, and a video security
    system.

28
  • Despite the pristine appearance small details on
the property show some wear and tear. Gutters on
the house are full of debris, preventing
appropriate drainage and subsequently part of the
garage roof is rotting away. The pool has not
been properly maintained and poses dangers with
lose drains and broken steps. The security system
is not active and several exterior landscaping
lights are burned out. The iron gate at the front
remains open since the tracking system
malfunctioned. Inside the home there are cleaning
chemicals and sharp utensils laying out on
counter tops and open shelves. There is little
food available in the cabinets and the thermostat
is inadequate for the size home it needs to
    support.
