THE SIMILE A simile is a comparison using like
or as. It usually compares two objects that are
not similar. His feet were as big as boats. We
are comparing the size of feet to boats. This
class is like a three ring circus. What do you
think we are comparing?

• The leaves are as orange as a pumpkin.
• The scarecrows blow in the wind like big rag
  dolls.

strong as an ox, As cute as a button, As smart

are talking you know what they'll say as soon
as you hear them begin a cliché.

THE METAPHOR
A metaphor states that one thing is something
else. It is a comparison, but it does NOT use
like or as to make the comparison. For example
Her hair is silk. The sentence is comparing (or
stating) that hair is silk.

Metaphor for a Family My family lives inside a
medicine chest Dad is the super-size band aid,
strong and powerfulbut not always effective in a
crisis.Mom is the middle-size tweezer,which
picks and pokes and pinches.David is the single
small aspirin on the third shelf,sometimes
ignored.Muffin, the sheep dog, is a round cotton
ball, stained and dirty, that pops off the shelf
and bounces in my way as I open the door.
