18Work Based Vocational Learning
- In Glasgow, over 1000 pupils are already
benefiting from the wide range of options on
offer under the councils Schools Vocational
Programme. The youngsters who participate are
getting early exposure to the workplace, and
developing the skills employers need. The
Council is now with the help of Cities Growth
funding working with neighbouring authorities
to help them develop similar programmes
19Birthday Surprise!
Enterprise experience
- Andrew reaches the grand old age of 36 next
weekend and hes having a party. You are going
to create a special dessert for the party. - Each person in the group thinks about their
favourite dessert and what it contains. As a
group you must come up with a dessert
which contains the main ingredient(s) from
each persons favourite dessert. The group
must then make a model of the dessert using the
resources on - the tables around the room.
20Your Task
Entrepreneurial Activity
- You are a newly formed company created to produce
souvenirs which reflect Scottish cities. - Your first city is Glasgow.
- As a company you must produce a prototype which
is new, innovative and commercially viable. You
are also required to deliver a 2 minute
presentation to a group of venture capitalists
outlining the product unit cost and
profitability, production, marketing,
distribution and sales.

24The Curriculum
- Earlier this year, some pupils from Oldmachar
Academy in Aberdeen organised a conference on
Citizenship for teachers and fellow pupils from
across Aberdeen. The planning needed was
considerable at the event itself, primary and
secondary pupils organised and ran workshops.
The degree of individual responsibility and
decision-taking was considerable. The output
as far as teachers were concerned was
enormously helpful in preparing them for teaching
Citizenship
25The Curriculum cont.
- Pupils in Portree Primary school have gone back
to the future. Theyve developed an
award-winning record on CD of local experiences
of World War 2 and their product has been
purchased by schools across Scotland. A terrific
example of an entrepreneurial project developed
in the community, about the community, for the
community.
