Classifying Climates

• Climatologists- people who study climates
• 1918- Wladmir Koppen classified climates by using
  the temperature and precipitation of regions that
  had different plant types
• 6 groups- tropical, mild, dry, continental,
  polar, and high elevation

Adaptations

• The type of climate in an area determines the
  type of vegetation found in that area
• Adaptation- any structure or behavior that helps
  an organism survive in its environment
• they are inherited
• They develop over a long period of time

• Ex. Cactus, fur, spiny leaves

  particular environment
• Hibernation- mammals undergoing a period of
  greatly reduced activity in winter
• What triggers hibernation??
• What happens during hibernation??

• Estivation- when some water animals burrow into
  mud and enter an inactive state during periods of
  intense heat (ex. Lungfish)
• Other examples- bees cluster together reptiles
  hide in shady areas on hot, sunny days you sweat
  to cool down or shiver to warm up
