Functional outcome of radical surgery for
intramedullary spinal cord tumors in pediatric
patients with severe neurological deficit

SX for IMSCT is first-line treatment BUT
...patients with advanced preoperative
sensorimotor deficit are at substantial risk of
developing a complete loss of function, and the
preoperative grade of all those who improved was
less than 3...

In patients suffering perioperative morbidity the
McCormick functional grade was more likely to be
higher than in other patients...

The risk of surgery-related morbidity to the
patient increased in proportion to preoperative
neurological dysfunction.

Between 2002-2005 55 patients with intramedullary
spinal cord tumors were operated by author in
Burdenko NSI. Kids (less then 18 yo) represented
40 patients. In our prospectively hold database
we identified 21 kids who were in poor grade by
McCormick scale (3-4) before surgery
we are using original McCormick 4-points scale
