Title: ASIAN (INDIAN) ELEPHANTS
1ASIAN (INDIAN) ELEPHANTS
- Quick ways to check the difference between an
African elephant and an Asian elephant. - Look for-
- Two lumps at the top of the head.
- Round humped back is its tallest part.
- Small ears that do not go beyond the shoulder.
- 5 front and 4 back toes.
- Only one tip on its trunk.
2The two bumps on the top of the head is easily
recognized from a distance.
3The elephant walks on its tiptoes. The large
cushion of fat in the heel helps it to absorb the
shock by spreading the weight across the foot.
4The triangular lower lip helps to hold the grass
as it is passed to it by the trunk.
5With only moderate vision and long eyelashes, the
elephant also uses its trunk to see.
6The tail is sturdy and able to support a harness.
A branch of leaves does a better job at keeping
the flies away.
7Only male Asian elephants grow tusks which are
enlarged incisor teeth.
8The trunk is an elongated top lip, which also
contains the nostrils.
9BAS-RELIEF (Low Relief)
- A form of decoration found on the side of
things. - A design made up so that part of the object
stands out from a flat surface. - Elephants are often found in bas relief
decorations on the sides of temples.

Good Luck.
11Look for the following features-
- Placement and size of the ears.
- Exactly where do the tusks come from?
- Where does the tail attach to its backside?
- Does the trunk reach down to the ground?
- Is the elephant running, walking, standing?
- Shape of the leg and foot.
- Decoration or clothing. Why is it there?
- Bumps on the head and on the forehead.
- Location and size of the eyes.
