What is CAS?
  • CAS is a framework for experiential learning.
  • An opportunity to learn by doing real tasks.
  • An opportunity to work with others in community.
  • An opportunity to reflect on attitudes and
    values.

CAS activities
  • Occur outside the normal curriculum
  • Can extend what is done in the classroom
  • Often involve group work
  • Involve the student in new roles
  • Involve goal setting
  • Include reflection on progress

  • Creativity (50 hours)
  • - doing dance, theatre, music, art
  • - participating in other artistic and
    imaginative endeavours
  • - creative thinking in planning service
    projects

  • Action (50 hours)
  • - participating in individual and team sports
  • - doing physical activities outside of the
    normal curriculum
  • - engaging in physical exertion during service
    and creative projects

  • Service (50 hours)
  • - interacting with groups in the school and
    community (very broad)
  • - doing things for and with others
  • - showing real commitment to and respect for
    others

CAS Guidelines
  • A CAS activity should
  • Involve a new experience for a student
  • Involve planning and goal-setting
  • Have positive consequences for the student and
    others
  • Provide opportunities for learning and reflection
  • Integrate different skills

CAS Guidelines
  • CAS activities should not include
  • Paid work
  • Academic curricular activities
  • Mindless repetitive tasks
  • Service to your family
  • Religious activities or religious/political
    proselytizing

The student must
  • Document time spent in fulfilling CAS
    requirement
  • Complete CAS/AEF form at the end each activity
  • Maintain a reflective diary or journal
  • Complete CAS/SFS final summary report at the end
    of Grade 12 (reflective essay)

The CAS Journal
  • Is an integral part of experiential learning
  • Shows the planning and goal setting process for
    each activity (before)
  • Documents the activity itself (during)
  • Reflects on lessons about self and others learned
    from the activity (after)
  • Encourages analysis, evaluation plans for further
    action

  • What is my desired goal?
  • What do I need to know prior to this activity?
  • Who will supervise this activity?
  • How much time do I plan to commit to this
    activity?

The CAS Supervisor must
  • Introduce the program to the students
  • Provide students with forms
  • Track and monitor student progress
  • Help students develop a CAS program that suits
    their needs and interests
  • Relentlessly hound students to complete the CAS
    requirement in order to receive the IB diploma
  • Write a final report on each student
