Title: What is a Hippo By Amber

1
What is a Hippo?By Amber
  • I chose hippos because they are interesting.
  • An amazing thing about them is that they can bite
    a crocodile in half.
  • They can also kill a lion!
  • Hippopotamus in Greek means river horse.
  • They are the worlds third largest mammal!

2
Physical Description
  • The hippos skin color is dark gray.
  • The common hippo grows to be five and a half feet
    tall!
  • Baby bulls play-fight, but adult bulls fight
    until one dies.
  • Hippos grow to weigh 5100 pounds.

3
Habitat
  • Most hippos live in rivers, but the pygmy hippos
    hide in the rain forest.
  • Common hippos come out of the water to eat.
  • Hippos in the wild are only found in Africa,
    south of the Sahara desert.

4
Diet
  • Hippos are herbivores, but still eat very little
a day. Cattle eat twice the amount as hippos.
  • You never want to disturb a grazing hippo!
  • Hippos like to eat grass, but in zoos hippos also
    eat hay, fruits, and veggies.
  • Sometimes in water, hippos go to the bottom and
    eat water plants.
  • Hippos eat 80-100 pounds of grass a day!

5
Babies
  • Mother hippos are very strict about having single
    file lines.
  • Hippos are mammals.
  • Sometimes calves are born under water.
  • Babies are hunted by crocodiles and lions.
  • Babies grow inside their moms tummy for 7 to 8
    months.
  • Calves drink their moms milk before solid food.
  • At birth they weigh 30 to 39 pounds, and are 5
    feet long.
