Title: NEW HEMOSTATIC AGENTS
1NEW HEMOSTATIC AGENTS
- Combat GauzeTM
-
- WoundStatTM
2Scientific Study
- Laboratory studies have demonstrated two new
hemostatic agents are superior to the current
hemostatic agents - New Hemostatic Agents

- Trauma Stat bandage (TS)

6Results
- Both agents (Combat GauzeTM and WoundStatTM)
demonstrated an increased ability to stop
bleeding over all other hemostatic agents. - Both agents are pro-coagulant and actually cause
the blood to clot. - Neither agent has any exothermic (heat
generating) reaction. - Cost of both is significantly less than HemConTM
7Application Procedure
- All hemostatics work better when the hemorrhage
has been controlled by pressure to a pressure
point proximal to the wound. - This slows or stops the blood to the wound,
allowing better visualization and better
application of the hemostatic agent
8What is QuikClot Combat Gauze
- Combat Gauze is a 3-inch x 4-yard roll of
sterile Hemostatic Gauze. - Combat Gauze is impregnated with kaolin which
is an advanced hemostatic agent. - It controls moderate to severe blood loss by
rapidly promoting coagulation.

9How does it work?
- Combat Gauze causes rapid, localized
coagulation. - It forms a stable blood clot in a variety of
combat wounds. - It does not absorb into the body and is safe to
leave in the wound until further medical care is
available. - Combat Gauze does not produce any heat.
- Combat Gauze controls bleeding faster than
conventional methods.

10Expose Wound Identify Bleeding
- Open clothing around wound.
- If possible, remove excess pooled blood from
the wound while preserving any clots already
formed in the wound. - Locate source of most active bleeding.

Fax 910-426-0009, Website www.combatgauze.com
11Pack Wound Completely
- Pack Combat Gauze tightly into wound and
directly onto bleeding source. - More than one gauze may be required to stem
blood flow. - Combat Gauze maybe re-packed or adjusted into
the wound to ensure proper placement

12Apply Direct Pressure
- Quickly apply pressure until bleeding stops.
- Suggested time is 2 to 3 minutes of continuous
contact. - Reassess for proper and effective placement.
- Combat Gauze may be repacked if initial use
fails to provide hemostasis.

13Bandage over Combat Gauze
- Leave Combat Gauze in place.
- Wrap to effectively secure the dressing in the
wound.
Although the ETB is shown in this picture, the
wound may be secured with any compression
bandage, Ace wrap, roller gauze, or cravat.

14Transport Monitor Casualty
- Do not remove the bandage or Combat Gauze.
- Transport to next level of medical care as soon
as possible.

15Document on Casualty Card
- Document CG on the casualty card, or attach
the empty package with the casualty. - This will identify the major hemorrhage to the
field surgical team.

18WoundStatTM
- WoundStatTM is a 5.5 ounce package of
non-metallic clay mineral (smectite) composed of
hydrated sodium, calcium, aluminum silicate. - This product swells when exposed to water or
blood and forms a clay-like material with high
plasticity and tissue adhesiveness.

27If Combat GauzeTM does not control the bleeding
- Medics should remove the Combat GauzeTM and apply
WoundStatTM as directed on the WoundStatTM
package. - An additional three minutes of pressure needs to
be applied to the wound after the WoundStatTM has
been applied and packed into the wound.
28Conclusion
- Two new hemostatic agents are available for use.
- Both are superior in laboratory models in
stopping bleeding than the current hemostatic
agents. - Both are easy to use
- Both actually promote blood clotting
- Both are cheaper than HemConTM Bandages
