Consequences Continued
  • Hosea 8.1 9.9

The Israelites are stubborn, like a stubborn
heifer(4.16a)
Hosea 8.4b-6 Hosea 13.2
With their silver and gold they make idols for themselves to their own destruction. Throw out your calf-idol, O Samaria! My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of purity? They are from Israel! This calfa craftsman has made it it is not God. It will be broken in pieces, that calf of Samaria. And now they sin more and more, And make for themselves molten images, Idols skillfully made from their silver, All of them the work of craftsmen. They say of them, Let the men who sacrifice kiss the calves!

King David
  • When your days are over and you rest with your
fathers, I will raise up your offspring to
succeed you, who will come from your own body,
and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one
who will build a house i.e., temple for my
Name, and I will establish the throne of his
    kingdom forever (2 Sam 7.12-13)

4
Apostate King
  • Jeroboam thought to himself, The kingdom will
now likely revert to the house of David. If
these people go up to offer sacrifices at the
temple of the LORD in Jerusalem, they will again
give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam
king of Judah. They will kill me and return to
King Rehoboam. After seeking advice, the king
made two golden calves. He said to the people,
It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem.
Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up
out of Egypt. One he set up in Bethel, and the
other in Dan. And this thing became a sin the
people went even as far as Dan to worship the one
    there.

Apostate King
  • Jeroboam built shrines on high places and
appointed priests from all sorts of people, even
though they were not Levites. He instituted a
festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth
month, like the festival held in Judah, and
offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in
Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made.
And at Bethel he also installed priests at the
high places he had made. On the fifteenth day of
the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he
offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at
Bethel. So he instituted the festival for the
Israelites and went up to the altar to make
    offerings (1 Kgs 12.26-33).

The Agricultural Theme
They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. The stalk has no head it will produce no flour (8.7a-b).
They offer sacrifices given to me and they eat the meat, but the LORD is not pleased with them (8.13a).
8
The Agricultural Theme
Do not rejoice, O Israel do not be jubilant like the other nations. For you have been unfaithful to your God you love the wages of a prostitute at every threshing floor. Threshing floors and winepresses will not feed the people the new wine will fail them. They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, nor will their sacrifices please him. Such sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners all who eat them will be unclean. This food will be for themselves it will not come into the temple of the LORD. What will you do on the day of your appointed feasts, on the festival days of the LORD? (9.1-2, 4-5).
9
The Exile Theme
Israel has rejected what is good an enemy will pursue him. Now he will remember their wickedness and punish their sins They will return to Egypt (8.3, 13b).
Israel is swallowed up now she is among the nations like a worthless thing. For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey wandering alone. Ephraim has sold herself to lovers. Although they have sold themselves among the nations, I will now gather them together. They will begin to waste away under the oppression of the mighty king (8.8-10).
10
The Exile Theme
They will not remain in the LORDs land Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria. Even if they escape from destruction, Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them. Their treasures of silver will be taken over by briers, and thorns will overrun their tents (9.3, 6).

The days of punishment are coming, the days of
reckoning are at hand. Let Israel know this
(9.7).
  • When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by
armies, you will know that its desolation is
near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to
the mountains, let those in the city get out, and
let those in the country not enter the city. For
this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of
all that has been written. How dreadful it will
be in those days for pregnant women and nursing
mothers! There will be great distress in the
land and wrath against this people. They will
fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners
to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled
on by the Gentiles until the times of the
    Gentiles are fulfilled (Luke 21.20-24).

13
Sin Grace
  • Though Ephraim built many altars for sin
offerings, these have become altars for sinning
    (Hosea 8.11).
  • For certain men whose condemnation was written
about long ago have secretly slipped in among
you. They are godless men, who change the grace
of our God into a license for immorality and deny
Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord (v.4).
