Title: HND Group Software Engineering Implementation Project

1
HND Group Software Engineering Implementation
Project
  • Bob Burdoff

2
The Group
  • Our Group was made up of
  • Carol Robinson
  • Sarah Dawkins
  • Paul Rhoods
  • Myself Bob Burdoff

3
Project Selection
  • Group ideas had included
  • A telemetry system to get onsite data into a data
    base.
  • A Graphic editor made using Java
  • a Web-admin System for Hart boys

4
Reasons for Choice
  • Carol had been approached by Hart Boys to produce
a system for the club. Our other choices were
    purely conceptual without a defined
specification or requirement seemed more likely
    to have sufficient focus.

5
Hart Boys Football club System
  • Our meeting with the club revealed requirements
    for
  • A secure but remote access system to enable club
    officials to carry out admin,
  • A league table that would track all the Hart
    teams progress through the season
  • A method of offering kit to members that would
negate the current problems of lost orders, money
    etc.

6
The online store
  • Currently the club arranges order for jackets
other bits of kit for team members that are
    placed through several team managers.
  • This is problematical as collections have to be
made, funds handled poor communication lead to
    frustration recriminations.

7
Requirement overview
8
Feasibility
  • We were aware of several E-commerce software
packages but were warned about previous problems
    students had.
  • There were concerns over the lack of server side
access at college which meant lecturers were
limited as to the help they could offer.
  • Due to the transient nature of club officials,
who would take responsibility for it?
  • Who would actually manage the orders?

9
The Main Problems
  • Going live with a full blown E-commerce solution
required a business account which the club was
not interested in the the nature of the
    officials was also causing problems.
  • The Full blown store was more of a personal want
than a system need had to be abandoned since
the club is not in a position to adopt this.
  • The software packages werent as easy to use as
they suggested - lots of time had been lost
    finding this out.
  • Finding a suitable alternative to allow the
    customer to place orders.

10
The Main Problems 2
  • We had a series of group problems in the first
half of the year lost out club contact before a
descent rapport had been established with the
    club.
  • It was proving very difficult to find a suitable
replacement to construct the site in, as
alternatives all required some form of server
    side scripting.

11
Time management suffered
12
Solutions
  • Coding design problems were resolved using
    basic HTML,
  • Orders would be mailed direct to the supplier,
  • potential time wasters could be filtered out by
non parity of submitted E mail address the one
the order comes from although this is not fool
    proof.

13
The Final Deliverables
  • A front end to the site that is intuitive
    aesthetically acceptable
  • Files optimised for quick download.
  • A web site that allows potential customers to
    browse the club strip
  • The ability for them to place orders
  • No problems with business accounts or
    accountability for the club officials.

Critique
  • The specified requirements were met, but my own
goal of producing a full blown E-commerce
    solution failed
  • Also, after careful planning to manage risks
particularly with losing our group focus, we lost
our main club contact which didnt become clear
    for some time
  • We did manage to recognise early on as a group
our work was too closely coupled we addressed
    this.

16
  • A huge amount of time was lost trying to learn
software packages although I did learn to know
when to put them down, it still consumed a large
    percentage of available project time.
  • Outputs (Orders) are hard to read by the supplier
  • a secure login (that would require some server
side work) would help mitigate orders placed by
    time wasters.

17
Possible Developments
  • A reader is a must have for the supplier as
  • It would remove all the spacing characters from
the order make it more readable less prone to
    order errors
  • It could be used to parity check sent from
contact Email addresses to find possible time
    wasters
  • finally, the supplier might be prepared to
adopt the store into its own business model.
this could then become a full blown E-commerce
    solution
