Slimy colony formed by the dextran-producing
bacterium, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, growing on
a sucrose-containing medium. When the same
organism is grown on glucose, the colonies are
small and not slimy because dextran synthesis
requires sucrose (Section 21.3 for further
