3Introduction
- TENNIS Northern (Inc) is an amateur sports body
promoting and managing the game of tennis as a
lifelong activity. It also exists as a Charitable
Trust. - Our mission is more people playing more tennis
more often. - NORTH SHORE CITY is the major municipality in the
Tennis Northern region and is the land owner of
both Tennis Northern facilities at Forrest Hill
and at Albany. - NORTH SHORE CITY is the 4th largest city in New
Zealand and three of its strategic objectives
are - Our people have the opportunity to be active fit
and healthy. - Our city's services and facilities meets the
needs of the community. - Our city's identity and brand is recognized,
promoted and celebrated locally and
internationally.

- History
- First formed in 1948 as the North Shore Lawn
Tennis sub association - Today there are 7,000 playing members, a further
75,000 players of various ages use our two venues
each year - Facilities
- 6 Indoor Tennis Courts at Tennis Park Albany
- 6 Floodlit Hard Surface Tennis Courts at Tennis
Park Albany - 17 outdoor courts in total (4 of which are newly
laid astro-grass courts) - Gym, shop, Tennis Northern offices, conference
room, lounge/bar area - Tennis Programmes
- After School Grassroots Tennis Coaching Programme
- Adult Beginner Programmes
- Social/Recreational Tennis Players
- Tennis Academy 9 -18 yrs elite players
- 320 Junior interclub teams
- 240 Senior interclub teams
- 130 mid week ladies teams (summer)
- 70 midweek ladies teams (winter)

- The Tennis Northern Region (Inc) has a strong
Board of Governance, which was formed in 2004.
The Board consists of - Celia Patrick, Devonport, Dir Operations Housing

- Geoff Dickson (PhD), Northcote, Sports Management

- Tennis Northern Region (Inc) provides employment
for around 11 people at its two sites Albany
Tennis Park and Bond Crescent, Forrest Hill - In 2008 the Tennis Northern Board appointed David
Frank as its CEO. David is from the UK, has a
playing and coaching background and has a Tennis
Management business in the UK. - Jeff Simpson is another key individual. The
former NZ player and Davis Cup Captain is the
resident professional and technical director of
the Tennis Northern Regional High Performance
Academy.
7Tennis Demographics
- Based on SPARC's research tennis is equally
popular amongst women and men and rates in the
three most popular sports for both genders. -
- It is also in the top four sports in each age
band. - Of specific note to the North Shore Amongst the
residents of North Harbour, Tennis has been the
fourth most popular participation sport amongst
young people and the second most popular
participation sport amongst adults over the last
twelve months. -

10Artificial Grass
- Why Artificial Grass as a playing Surface?
- Better for Social/Recreational Players due to
Lower Bounce - Better for Older Players as Shock Impact to
joints is minimal - Popular with Adult Team Players due to
Bounce/Impact - Potential Multi-Sport use i.e. Soccer Training
- Excellent for Grassroots Coaching when young
players fall and to slow the ball to aid hand-eye
coordination - Can be used during and immediately after Rain,
unlike hard courts which become slippery
11Peak Court Time Pressure/Benefits
- Peak Times
- Peak Time Court Pressure between 6.0010pm Monday
to Friday Indoor and Existing Outdoor (Floodlit).
- Who wants court time?
- After-school Grassroots Programmes, Junior Elite
Coaching, Social and Recreational Adult Access,
Junior and Senior Interclub matches, other
sporting community groups (see letter of support
from United Soccer 1) all compete for court time
at the same times of day. - What will the new Floodlights give us?
- Each additional floodlit court increases access
times by 1000 hours per annum, based on 4 hours
of additional light five times per week. Four
courts 4000 Extra Court Hours if Artificial
Courts are Floodlit. - Winter Access to Artificial Courts during Peak
Times leading to more coaching and playing time
for children, adults and other groups. - i.e. United Soccer 1/Korean Tennis Academy (see
attached letter of support). -
