Brain Stem
  • Stem-like portion of the brain that controls
    vegetative functions ( i.e. respiration's, heart
rate), and connects the brain to the spinal cord.
  • Divided into the midbrain, pons, Medulla
Oblangata, and the Reticular Activity System.

12
Midbrain
  • Involved in hearing and visual reflexes.

13
Pons
  • Relays information from the cerebrum to the
    cerebellum.
  • Houses the sleep center and the respiratory
center, which along with the medulla controls
    breathing.

14
Medulla Oblangata
  • Located between the pons and spinal cord.
  • Contains the centers that control heart rate,
respiration's, and constriction of vessel walls.

15
Reticular Activity System
  • Responsible for consciousness.
  • Keeps us alert and out of trouble.
  • Involved in sleep-wake cycle.

12 Cranial Nerves
  • I. Olfactory - Sense of smell.
  • II. Optic - Vision.
  • III. Oculomotor - Eye movements.
  • IV. Trochlear - Eye movements.
  • V. Trigeminal - Sensations of face, scalp and
    teeth, chewing movements.
  • VI. Abducens - Turning eyes outwards.

18
12 Cranial Nerves
  • VII. Facial - Sense of taste, facial expressions.
  • VIII. Acoustic - Hearing, sense of balance.
  • IX. Glossopharyngeal - Sensation of throat, taste
    swallowing movements, secretion of saliva.

19
12 Cranial Nerves
  • X. Vagus - Sensations of throat and larynx and of
thoracic and abdominal organs, swallowing, voice
production, slowing of heartbeat, acceleration of
    peristalis (muscle contractions).
  • XI. Spinal Accessory - Shoulder movements,
    turning of the head.
  • XII. Hypoglossal - Tongue movements.

20
12 Cranial Nerves
  • Cranial nerves do not cross. Therefore, a right
cranial nerve insult will result in right sided
    deficit.
