19An eternal covenant
- But the promises were not fulfilled in Abrahams
lifetime - 8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place
he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed
and went, even though he did not know where he
was going.9 By faith he made his home in the
promised land like a stranger in a foreign
country he lived in tents, as did Isaac and
Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same
promise... 13 All these people were still living
by faith when they died. They did not receive the
things promised... Heb 118...13 (NIV) - So Abraham will have to live again!
- Jesus said
- 56 Your ancestor Abraham rejoiced as he looked
forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad."
John 856 (NLT)
20A new testament
- Jeremiah 3131 - "The time is coming," declares
the LORD , "when I will make a new covenant with
the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.
21A new testament

and it was credited to him as righteousness.7Unde
rstand, then, that those who believe are children
of Abraham - v19 - What, then, was the purpose of the law? It
was added because of transgressions until the
Seed to whom the promise referred had come. - V24 - So the law was put in charge of us until
Christ came that we might be justified by faith
22About the two testaments/covenants
23The message of the new testament
24The new testament
- Recap Why did God decide on a New
Testament/agreement? - What does the New Testament say about the old?
- What Jesus said about the Old Testament
- Why the New Testament is all about Jesus
25The new testament
- What Jesus said about the Old Testament
- Reminder Your father Abraham rejoiced at the
thought of seeing my day he saw it and was glad
John 856 - "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law
or the Prophets I have not come to abolish them
but to fulfill them. Matthew 517 - How did Jesus fulfil the Old Testament?
26The new testament
- Jesus sent two disciples, 2saying to them, "Go to
the village ahead of you, and at once you will
find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her.
Untie them and bring them to me. 3If anyone says
anything to you, tell him that the Lord needs
them, and he will send them right away." - 4This took place to fulfill what was spoken
through the prophet 5"Say to the Daughter
of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey, on a
colt, the foal of a donkey.'
27The new testament
- So Jesus fulfilled, or completed the Old
Testament. - He also started the New Testament
- The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind
'You are a priest forever.' 22Because of
this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a
better covenant. Hebrews 721-22 - Why is the New Testament better?
28Do I need saving?
29Do I need Saving?
- Recap Am I a sinner?
- Defining saved and salvation
- How can I please God?
30Types of Sin
- Defiant sin
- Anyone who sins defiantly . . . blasphemes the
LORD, and that person must be cut off from his
people. (Numbers 1530) - Deliberate sin
- The acts of the sinful nature are obvious sexual
immorality, impurity and debauchery idolatry and
witchcraft hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of
rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and
envy drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
(Galatians 51921)
31Types of Sin
- Unintentional sin
- If a member of the community sins unintentionally
and does what is forbidden in any of the LORDs
commands, he is guilty. When he is made aware of
the sin he committed . . . (Leviticus 42728) - Sins of omission
- Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do
and doesnt do it, sins. (James 417)
Do we ever sin in any of these ways?
32Am I a sinner?
- How did you answer the question on the previous
slide? - What does the Bible say?
- for all have sinned and fall short of the glory
of God Romans 323 - There is not a righteous man on earth who does
what is right and never sins. Ecc 720
33What are the consequences of sin
- Therefore, just as sin entered the world through
one man, and death through sin, and in this way
death came to all men, because all sinned Romans
512 - Who was the man?
- Sin leads (directly and indirectly) to our deaths
- For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of
God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our
Lord. Romans 623
34What are the consequences of righteousness
- God demonstrates his own love for us in this
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 58 - For if, by the trespass of the one man, death
reigned through that one man, how much more will
those who receive the gift of righteousness
reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.
Romans 517
35When are we saved?
- So Gods gift to us is Jesus
- Believing in Jesus saves us
- Is that the end of the story ?
continue working out your salvation with awe and
reverence (Philippians 212)
36When are we saved?
- Saved and Salvation
- Philippians 212-So then, my dear friends, just
as you have always obeyed, not only in my
presence but even more in my absence, continue
working out your salvation with awe and
reverence, for the one bringing forth in you both
the desire and the effort for the sake of his
good pleasure is God.
37How can I please God?
- Can I please God by my own efforts?
- Touched earlier on salvation coming not by good
works - Romans 117For in the gospel a righteousness from
God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith
from first to last, just as it is written "The
righteous will live by faith. - So nothing we do can save us!
38How can I please God?
- If not, how can I please God?
- Hebrews 11 6And without faith it is impossible
to please God, because anyone who comes to him
must believe that he exists and that he rewards
those who earnestly seek him. - But what is faith?
- Homework Hebrews ch11
- Why is the New Testament better?
