White -Tailed Deer
  • One fascinating thing about white-tailed deer is
that they are difficult to see in the wild. Deer
are shy animals and their coats blend in with
    their habitat.

3
Whitetails
  • White-tailed deer are sometimes also called
whitetails. Its tail grows up to one foot long!

4
White-Tailed Deer
  • There is so much more to learn about white-tailed
    deer.
  • In our power point presentation, you will
discover more about what white-tailed deer look
like, their habitat, what white-tailed deer like
to eat, how they care for their fawns, and also
some interesting and amazing facts about
    white-tailed deer.

5
What Whitetails Look Like
  • Have you ever seen a beautiful white-tailed deer?
Deer have large ears that they can move to pick
up sounds from different directions. A deer sheds
    its coat twice a year.

6
  • Usually most deer have reddish brown hair with
lighter bellies. This color blends well with
their surroundings in the summer and makes deer
    very difficult to spot.

7
In the winter, the whitetails hair turns
brownish gray. This helps a white-tailed deer
blend into its winter home.
8
  • Do you know how tall a whitetail grows? Whitetail
bucks may stand up to more than 3 feet tall.
Thats about as tall as a four-year-old child.
It weighs between 220 and 330 pounds. Thats
    more than most grownups weigh!

9
  • Bucks grow antlers on their heads. A buck sheds
its antlers every winter and in the spring new
    antlers grow.

10
Where They Live
  • Do you realize that there are forty-five kinds of
deer? Deer live in many parts of the world. They
are found in North and South America, Europe and
Asia. But the whitetails are the most common deer
in North America. White-tailed deer live in
southern parts of Canada and throughout the
United States except the far southwest. The
woodlands of North America are home to the
    whitetail.

11
What They Eat
  • Have you ever wondered what white-tailed deer
eat? Deer eat many different kinds of plants but
they dont eat much grass. They love to eat twigs
from bushes, leaves, flowers, fruit, acorns and
    mushrooms.

12
Their Teeth
  • Deer do not have top front teeth. Instead theres
a hard gum-like pad. The toothless spaces allow
the tongue to move the food around, mixing it up
in the saliva. The saliva also contains juices
that help to soften the plants.

13
  • The tough plants that deer eat wear down the
deers teeth. So, deer keep on growing new teeth
    throughout their life.

14
Fawns
  • It is fascinating to learn about white-tailed
deer fawns. Fawns are born in the spring. Female
whitetails are called does. Does have one to
    three babies each year.

15
Fawns
  • Whitetail fawns are reddish brown with bright
white spots. When a fawn lies down, their spots
blend in with the little spots of sunlight in the
grass. Their light brown fur blends in well with
    the leaves and twigs.

16
  • The mother leaves the fawn hidden in the grass
while she goes to find food. A newborn fawn
drinks its mothers milk and begins to eat plants.

17
Whitetails in Danger
  • Youll be shocked to learn that long ago,
millions of whitetails lived in North America.
But because people hunted them and cut down trees
in the forests, by the year 1900, only 500,000
were living in many of the places where they had
    lived.

18
Saving the Whitetails
  • To save the whitetails, the United States had to
make new laws. People could only hunt deer at
certain times of the year. Trees were planted to
make new homes for the white-tailed deer.

19
  • The government has also made special parks to
protect the deer. People are not allowed to hunt
    deer in these parks.

20
Whitetails Came Back
  • Now, because the deer had more fawns, and fewer
deer were killed, the number of white-tails grew
back. By the year 2000, about 15 to 20 million
white-tailed deer lived in the United States!
Today, they are the most common large wild
    animals in North America.
