Penguins are birds.

• They can not fly.
• All penguins are excellent swimmers.
• Penguins vary in size.
• Penguins waddle when they walk.

There are 17 different types of penguins

• The Emperor penguin
• is the largest.
• The smallest is the
• Fairy penguin.
• The Rockhopper hops
• on rocks.
• The Macaroni looks
• like he has long
• eyebrows.

The Emperor Penguin Life Cycle

• Mother penguins lay one or two eggs.

• Father Emperor penguins take care of the egg,
  while the mother goes to the ocean
• to find food.
• The father carries the egg on his feet. He
  does not eat for several months while caring
• for the egg.

• When the chick hatches, its parents must feed it
  and keep it warm.
• Parents go out to sea when the chick is old
• enough.

• Young chicks form a creche to stay
• together until they have grown their
• adult feathers and can go to sea.

• Tobogganing- sliding on the snow with its belly

• Porpoising- jumping out of the water while
• swimming

Penguin Defenses

• The penguins color helps protect it from its
• enemies.If an enemy is below, it may not see
• the white front of the penguin because it
• would look like sunlight.If the enemy is
• overhead, the penguins back would blend in
• with the oceans dark color.

• Penguins are excellent swimmers. They can
• swim up to 15 miles an hour. They use their
• speed to catch food and escape from enemies.
