1 Getting Management Buy-In
How to Develop and Implement Home Energy

2An old man, a boy a donkey were going to town.
The boy rode on the donkey the old man walked.
As they went along they passed some people who
remarked it was a shame the old man was walking
the boy was riding
3The man boy thought maybe the critics were
right, so they changed positions. Later, they
passed some people that remarked, "What a shame,
he makes that little boy walk."
4They then decided they both would walk! Soon they
passed some more people who thought they were
stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to
ride. So, they both rode the donkey. Now they
passed some people that shamed them by saying how
awful to put such a load on a poor donkey.
5The boy man said they were probably right, so
they decide to carry the donkey. As they crossed
the bridge, they lost their grip on the animal
he fell into the river and drowned.
The moral of the story?
6If you try to please everyone, you might as
well... Kiss your ass good-bye
7Why do we do what we do
- DMEAs success begins with a board of directors
and senior management that nurtures a cooperative
culture with a 3-legged stool concept which
gives equal importance to the - Operational effectiveness of a distribution wire
company (Best practice) - Promoting members efficient energy use
- Renewable, sustainable energy initiatives
- Community involvement
8Best Practice Cooperative
We extend the grid and meter and bill for
electricity
9Energy Efficient Membership
Provide education and access to energy efficient
technologies for our membership
10Renewable, sustainable energy initiatives
Reinforce and practice culture for renewable and
sustainability
11Community Involvment
Integration of Energy awareness by actively
participating in our communities
12What drove us to this craziness?
We listened to our owners!!!!
13Our mission
14Topics We Will Cover Today
- DMEAs strategic use of energy efficiency
- Selling electricity at a positive margin
- Improving load factor
- Promoting energy efficiency responsibility
- DMEAs tactics
- Heating/cooling
- Lighting
- Whole House improvements
- Being the energy experts
- Getting things done with limited staff
15DMEAs Energy Efficiency Vision
- Use electric technologies to increase margins
from electric sales - Increase sales of positive margin kWh
- Promote energy efficiency, not conservation, and
target loads that put pressure on electric rates
1st - Be smart, not shiver in the dark
- Promote best practice strategies to reduce
members total ENERGY use by 25 (yes we save
gas propane!) - Increase member loyalty
16What does my energy bill pay for? Source
ENERGY STAR?
17Energy-Saving Improvements Dont Cost, They Pay
18Do Your Math!
- How do the supply side economics work?
- How do the demand side economics work?
- Which technologies (supply or demand) can be
applied to provide economic value to our
members? - How much can you afford to give to support
non-economic causes
19DMEAs HVAC Strategy
- Recapture electric heating market while
increasing load factor margins - Manage our system peak demand
- Reduce members overall energy bills (lifecycle)
- Promote efficiency and environment
- Capture non-kWh income streams
- Maintain a long-term member relationship
- Only GeoExchange Met All Criteria

23Efficient Lighting (Cut Bad Load)
DMEA was just recognized as an Energy Star
Partner of the Year for our community based
efficient lighting effort.
