Title: An Asian styled garden proposal

1

Bend in the River
  • An Asian styled garden proposal

2
Our Goals
  • To construct a garden based principally on
Japanese styles, using modern interpretations of
the four basic themes of water, plants, rocks,
    and architecture
  • To focus on the theme of movement, in continuity
with the flow of the existing river

3
The Entranceway
  • A three-piece Asian styled archway
  • To emphasize that one is entering into an
enclosed garden paradise, separate from the
    normal world
  • Represents the architectural element of the garden

The Rock Bed
  • To cater to the path of desire, a rock garden

between the right of the bridge and the left of
    the archway
  • Acts as a dry water feature, simultaneously
    representing our rock element.

which frames its boundaries, acting as the
    primary water feature
  • Will include the hosta pond to the right before
the entrance, filled with white cobble to mimic a
    pool
  • The stone bed will have a cobble base, and will
be designed in the shape of a pond, larger rocks
    will represent islands

Obscurity and Mystery
  • Center island and elevated hill block the view
from the bridge and obscure the rest of the
    garden from the viewer
  • The hidden bench under the dogwood tree incites
curiosity in the viewer to look for the
    mysterious perspective from above

14
Hidden View from Secret Bench

A Taoist Landscape
  • Focuses on binaries through color, texture, and
    height
  • Color includes soft tones of green shrubbery,
with highlights of red and pink flowers
  • Texture and color of different cobble highlights
a water simulation in the rock bed
  • The spruce in the teardrop will ascend in height,
accentuating movement and flow in the garden
  • Teardrop similar to TaI Chi symbol of yin yang
