Background

• 900 cow dairy herd

Reproductive Stages

• The ovsynch protocol results in 35 pregnancy
  rate
• May not be effective for animals given the first
  shot of GnRH on day 0-3 of the cycle
• These animals have too small of a follicle to
  ovulate at the time of the first shot so it will
  be ineffective
• Ovulation will occur days before AI-ineffective
• This can be overcome with the use of a PreSynch
  protocol but due to the timed calving desired by
  milk prices, we went without

Will it work?

• Ultrasound at 28d or rectal palpation at 35 for
  determination of pregnancy
• We suggest the producer determine efficacy of the
  regime by overall pregnancy rate
• Lower than before, try another protocol
• Higher than before, it works!

Labor and Management

• We would stress the need for timely hormonal
  injections and AI
• The pregnancy rate is directly affected if shots
  are off by more than a few hours
• We would also be sure to note that a heat will
  not necessarily be shown by these animals and to
  breed them anyway
• We would lastly note that it is important to
  allow the cows at least 70 DIM before starting
  the protocol to achieve higher pregnancy rates
• Reduces the number of cows not cycling
• Advantageno weekend labor necessary
