2What is Rugby?
- Rugby is a game that is played in over 120
countries throughout the world. - It is a game with a rich history and tradition.
- The games attraction is in its close teamwork,
physical combat, elusive running, ball handling
and kicking skills. - It is an exhilarating physical team challenge for
all physical sizes and both sexes.. - It combines a great spectator game with ethical
behaviour and fair play. - It provides a unique positive relationship
between players and supporters. - It is one of the fastest growing and third
biggest team sport in the world.
3The SPIRIT of Rugby !
- The Spirit of Rugby describes
- the love of the game with its traditions of
sportsmanship and camaraderie. - the high standards of discipline and behaviour on
the field. - the great feelings of club, national and
international pride. - the friendly behaviour of spectators.
4Object of the Game.
- The object of the game is that two teams of
fifteen players each, should score as many points
as possible by carrying, passing, kicking and
grounding the ball. The team scoring the greater
number of points being the winner of the match. - It is classified as an 'end zone invasion game'.
The aim of each team is to gain possession of the
ball, take it into opposition territory and to
place it in the in-goal area (end zone). - Rugby is a game of continuous flow, there is
constant competition for the ball at the
breakdown. These are called Rucks and Mauls. - Players and spectators love the combination of
running, passing, kicking and physical combat.
5The Rugby World Cup
The Rugby World Cup first took place in 1987 and
takes place every 4 years. The Webb Ellis Cup is
the prize given to the winner and is named after
the man credited for creating the game of rugby.

- It generated an international audience of 3.7
billion.
6History of Cyprus Rugby Federation.
- Formed in August 2006
- CRF became members of KOA (Cyprus Sports
Association) in May 2006 - Voted as members of FIRA-AER (Federation of
International Rugby Associations, Association
Europeenne Rugby) in December 2006 -

7Objectives of the Cyprus Rugby Federation.
- To promote and develop the game of rugby in
Cyprus. - To organise rugby events on a national and
international level in Cyprus. - To place Cyprus on the map in the rugby world.
- To attract visiting international sides to
Cyprus.

8Rugby in Cyprus.
- Rugby has been played by the British military in
Cyprus since 1950. - UK Military had an exclusive league of 6 teams
until 2003. - 1st Civilian team Pafos Tigers joined in 2003
and came 2nd. - In 2004 Limassol Crusaders and Nicosia Barbarians
joined the league. - Pafos Tigers won the league in 2005 and Nicosia
Barbarians came 2nd - In 2006 Nicosia Barbarians won the League and
Cup double. - Pafos Tigers won the league in 2008
9Mini (Children) and Youth Rugby
- The CRF objective is to establish mini and youth
rugby teams in all towns. - We wish to ensure the future of the game in
Cyprus. - Pafos and Limassol are already running mini rugby
programs. - Nicosia will be starting shortly.
- The clubs have been formed around international
schools to provide a nucleus of knowledgeable
players. - The programme will hopefully be extended in 2009
to Greek Schools.

10Tag Rugby
- This caters for players who do not wish the
physical contact game. - It is open to boys, girls of all ages.
- It appeals to novices and experienced players
alike. - As it is non contact it can be played on any
surface (Grass, Astroturf, Beach). - CRF will introduce a CRF Tag Rugby League in 2009.

After 2 years of participating in 4 qualifying
rounds of the European Sevens Tournament the
Cyprus 7s Rugby Team is now ranked 12th out of
29 European nations. We played the full
international 7s sides of France, Wales, Spain
and Italy.
