Title: ULTRAVIOLET, VISIBLE, AND GRAVITATIONAL ASTROPHYSICS PROGRAM

1
ULTRAVIOLET, VISIBLE, AND GRAVITATIONAL
ASTROPHYSICS PROGRAM
  • Philippe Crane
  • October 26, 2000

2
UV/Visible/IR/Submm Gravitational Astrophysics
Cluster Issues
  • Evolution of the Code SR Clusters toward theme
    oriented RA programs
  • How do this effect on going programs?
  • Gravity and Gravitational Astrophysics
  • Discipline Scientist for Fundamental Physics and
Gravity will be hired as part of the High Energy
    Cluster
  • Evolution of the current Gravity programs in
either ATP(theory) or High Energy Astrophysics
    and Fundamental Physics Cluster(Mission related
    work).
  • Evolution of the Sub-Orbital Program
  • Broaden the range of acceptable options for
    access to space eg
  • Shuttle Options
  • Piggy-backs
  • Missions of Opportunity like options

3
UV/Visible/IR/Submm Gravitational Astrophysics
Cluster Issues contd
  • Detector Developments, Detector Related
    Technology, and other Technology Developments
  • Currently Supporting Technology involves
    primarily optics, spectrographs, telescopes, and
    development of techniques like interferometry.
  • ROSS NRA responses included proposals for radio
    back-end developments, micro-machining of
    wave-guide parts, ASIC developments for
    micro-channel plate readouts etc etc.
  • Where or should we draw a line between detector
    developments, and supporting technology?
  • At developments obviously related to the initial
    detection of photons
  • CCDs, Photo-cathodes, front-ends
  • Or clearly related technologies

4
UV/Visible/IR/Submm Gravitational Astrophysics
Cluster Issues contd
  • Ultra-violet, Optical Detector Working Group
  • Follow-on from the Space Astrophysics Detector
Workshop held in June at the Space Telescope
    Science Institute.
  • Primary objective to provide a road-map for
UV/Optical detector developments for input to the
    Senior Review
  • Chaired by J. Christopher Blades
  • Ground based astronomy within the RA program
  • Ground-based support for federally funded
    research institutes GSFC, JPL, SAO.
  • About 300K per year.. About 4-5 grants.
  • Lab Astro - should we keep it combined or
    separate the HE part?
  • For ROSS 01 and Senior Review
  • Do we need an IR/Submm. Detector WG mirroring the
    UVODWG?
  • Plans for SARA Senior Review proposal writing
  • Origins RA issues
