Running wild
A story in three parts with four options
START
2PART 1 Katrina Reeves lived out on the open
prairies of America. She loved the vast emptiness
of the area and particularly she loved to see
wild horses which would gallop past the house on
their way to the creek. They were always led by a
powerful black stallion. One evening the
horses pounded past but the black stallion was
nowhere to be seen. By the next morning Katrinas
curiosity was such that she made up her mind to
follow the tracks of the wild horse in order to
search for the missing stallion. She rode out
into the hills until, about a mile away, she saw
a ominous circle of buzzards, waiting for prey,
whatever it was to die. Katrina hurried on,
convinced that their prey must be the black
stallion. She was right! Katrina found the
magnificent beast lying on its side, a huge wound
on its back. The horse didnt stir as Katrina
stroked its head. The eyes opened, however, and
fluttered at her with a mixture of fear and pain.
As quickly as she could she gave the horse some
water and made for help. It took Katrina some
time to persuade her father and uncle to bring
the wagon but eventually they agreed to help.
Several hours later, the horse was installed in
Mr. Reeves barn. Katrina talked happily about
how she would make him well and he would be her
horse. Mr Reeves smiled in agreement, but in his
heart he didnt think the stallion would live. If
it did, he knew it would always be a wild horse
and would never settle.
3Option A Part 2 The next day Katrina woke up and
fed the black stallion. She put some ointment on
the wound that was looking a lot smaller. All in
all, the black stallion was looking a lot
healthier. Katrina thought that the black
stallion was itching to get out, so she tacked
him up and took him outside. When she was
out of the range, about a mile, she found a
leopard which looked hurt! It had a very big
wound on its side, it looked deep and very sore.
Katrina and the black stallion galloped back to
the range. Katrina told her father and uncle that
there was an injured leopard, a mile from the
range. They took the cart to the place where the
leopard was and found some footprints leading to
the mountain. Why I think that the leopard was
attacked by a mountain lion. Katrina said. Yes
gal, it was viciously attacked, said Katrinas
dad. They drove up to the mountain and found the
lion that was causing all the problems. Well
keep tags on it, and it wont escape, said
Katrinas dad. Katrina turned around and the
black stallion was gone.
4Option B Part 2 Later that night Katrina woke up
because of inconspicuous neighs and an
unfamiliar light coming from the barn. Katrina
climbed out of her bed anxiously determined to
get out of the house and into the barn. Katrina
tried to turn the doorknob but the door was
seemingly locked. She did not want to wake her
father at these early hours of the morning. She
heard a clatter of pans drop to the ground. As
soon as she heard this she ran back to the house,
scared stiff. Katrina woke up the next morning,
exhausted. Was it a dream or was the stallion
really taken, she wondered to herself. As she had
that terrible thought, she ran outside. She ran
all the way across the open landscape towards the
buzzards. As she ran she wondered if the gruesome
buzzards had yet again stolen her magnificent
horse. She looked ahead. This time she had been
wrong. They had not taken the horse. The
buzzards spotted her. She let out a scream and
ran back to the barn. She looked down and saw
human footprints with horse footprints beside
right beside them
5Option C Part 2 Katrina tried not to worry about
the stallion. She wanted it to get better and
she wanted it to be hers, but Mr Reeves didnt
think it would live. The next day Mr. Reeves
gave medicine to the stallion for the wound.
Katrina decided to name the stallion in case she
would be allowed to keep him. She named it
Starlight. During the night a tiny man came
and stole the stallion and set the barn on fire.
6Option D Part 2 Mr. Reeves looked at the wound
and suggested that it was a big cat bite. After
that Katrina went back to where she found the
stallion. She found the imprint in the sand but
had not noticed it before. There were blood and
foot prints on the ground. She ran home so
quickly, she almost flew. When she arrived back
home she searched around the house looking for
her dad. She told him that she found the prints
and her dad went to look at them. Her dad
followed the tracks and it lead to a big cave.
They entered the cave there was a shadow of a

7Option A Part 3 Katrina looked around. Her
magnificent stallion was gone. Her father looked
around as well and there were footprints and a
collar lying on the ground. It was the
stallions. Katrina let out a horrendous cry
that echoed up the mountain. Other leopards
looked down at their friend that was wounded and
roared. Katrina looked at the spot where the
leopards were standing but the leopards were
already making their way down the mountain. They
attacked! Katrina and her dad were surrounded
by the vicious predators. As they looked across
the landscape where the dust was being trampled
they realised that there was the black stallion
and the wild horses standing behind him. They
scared away the leopards. A farmer came across
the field and said, Take that you stupid
leopard! Katrina let the mountain lion free and
it went back to its cave. She let the stallion
into the wild, but every time it rode by it
looked in the window at Katrina. The End
8Option B Part 3 Katrina found some footprints
that led to the mountain. She followed them and
found blood prints leading to the old cave, the
one that her dad had told her about. Then at the
back of the cave she saw a horse, just lying
there, badly injured. She heard a growling
noise behind her. It was an angry leopard there
was spit dribbling out of its mouth. The leopard
started to attack Katrina but the black stallion
triumphantly saved her. Katrina and the black
stallion ran back to the range and told Mr.
Reeves what they had just seen! Mr Reeves
questioned Katrina, Well how did the black
stallion get up there? I dont know, Uncle
Reeves! Go and ask the buzzards if they have
seen anything suspicious lately. Excuse me
Mr. Buzzard but have you seen anything
out-of-the-ordinary? inquired Katrina. There
was a strange man, replied the buzzard. When
Katrina got home, she told her father what the
buzzard had said. Her father said that it was
O.K. They both went outside and gave the black
stallion some more ointment. The black stallion
was looking a lot better! Niamh, Maria, Owen The

9Option C Part 3 The farmers came running from
all around with buckets of water. They put the
fire out and Mr Reeves asked if they knew anybody
that just got a stallion. They all said the same
thing, No! So Mr Reeves set out on a journey to
find the missing stallion. Katrina wanted to go
but Mr Reeves said, It is too dangerous. A
few hours later Katrina decided she really wanted
to go so she set off all by herself. After a few
hours she caught up with Mr Reeves. She tried to
keep her distance but she was so excited that she
couldnt resist. Mr. Reeves was so angry but
then they saw something - a truck and a black
stallion. They both ran! It was a
horse-observer. She explained to Mr. Reeves that
she thought he was a poacher. She apologised and
that was fine. She let Katrina keep the stallion
until it was better. Katrina was very happy.

10Option D Part 3 A dead horse! They thought it
was the stallion. They stepped into the cave and
heard people talking. They were talking about a
horse and then a gun went off. They looked down
and they saw dead frogs, maggots and slugs that
they had been walking on. She looked up and saw a
face dripping blood. They were so scared. They
ran out. Zombies and ghosts were standing at
the exit of the cave. They heard clicking. They
looked forward and saw the stallion. On his back
was a dwarf. The stallion charged at the zombies.
The zombies turned into dust and the ghosts
vanished. The men screamed and vanished into thin
air. Katrina and her dad got on the stallions
back and went home. When they got there Katrina
was told she could keep the stallion and they
never solved the case. It was a COMPLETE
MYSTERY!!! By Courtney, Peter, Niamh and
