DINOSAURS
3Characteristics of Dinosaurs
Many dinosaurs were enormous about 10-100 feet
tall, and around 50,000 pounds. Other dinosaurs
were small about the size of a cat. Some
dinosaurs were herbivores Some dinosaurs were
carnivores Some dinosaurs could swim. Some
dinosaurs were land walkers. Some dinosaurs
could fly.
4When did the dinosaurs live?
Dinosaurs lived throughout the Mesozoic Era, also
known as the Age of the Dinosaurs, which began
245 million years ago and lasted for 180 million
years.
5Mesozoic Era
- Is divided into three periods
- Triassic
- Jurassic
- Cretaceous
6Some Dinosaurs Include
Brontosaurus Stegosaurus Tyrannosaurus Rex
7Brontosaurus
70-90 feet long About 15 feet tall Footprints of
over 3 feet in length Herbivore Name means
Thunder Lizard Weighed over 30 tons Brain about
the size of a humans fist
8Stegosaurus
About 29 feet long Weighed about 2 tons Short
forelegs Two rows of upright triangular bony
plates along the back Four long bony spikes on a
flexible tail Name means Plated Lizard Herbivore
9Tyrannosaurus Rex
Name means Tyrant Lizard Known as the King of
the Dinosaurs Carnivore Arms were extremely
small Teeth were 6 inches long Weighed about 7
tons Over 50 sharp teeth
10Where did the Dinosaurs go?
Were there too many dinosaurs for the food
supply? Was there a great disaster? Did the
land get too dry?
11Scientists Believe
- A giant meteor hit the Earth.
- The meteor caused a huge amount of dust to get
into the air, which blocked the sunlight and
stopped plants from growing.
12How do We Know Dinosaurs Once Roamed the Earth?
Fossils tell us about the dinosaurs size,
shape, and food the dinosaur ate. skeletons
and bones are left behind for archeologists to
find.
13Fossils...
- Remains may include footprints, scratch marks,
bones, shells, eggs, and seeds.
- The remains of plants and animals that have been
preserved for millions of years.
14Lets Have Some Dinosaur Fossil Fun
Materials Play-doh Plaster of Paris Objects to
imprint in the Play-doh (seashells, rocks,
leaves, coins, pasta pieces, paperclips, acorns,
etc.) Tray
15Procedure
1. Form small groups of three students. 2.
Gather material from front table. 3. Students
will flatten out the Play-doh until it is about ½
-1 inch thick. 4. Students will then press
objects into the Play-doh. 5. Remove the objects
from the Play-doh. 6. Set the Play-doh aside on
a tray. 7. Wait for Play-doh to dry and
harden. 8. Pour the Plaster of Paris into the
Play-doh mold and let it dry. 9. Gently peel
out the Plaster of Paris, and the result
A Fossil!
16Put on Your Hardhat
Were going on a dig!
I will bury our fossils we made in the
sandbox. Well go on an expedition and dig up
the fossils like an archeologist.
