Title: Getting Started for real

1
Getting Started for real
  • Booby Traps
  • Hints
  • Symbology

2
Parts of the window
Menu Bar
Standard Tool bar
Display Area
TOC
Drawing Toolbar
3
Layer
  • Is symbolized spatial data
  • A Coverage or a Shapefile, even before YOU
    symbolize it, is a layer
  • A layer is also a layer that. references
geographic data stored in a data source, such as
a coverage, and defines how to display it.
  • In this context a layer file (.lyr) contains NO
data, just info on how to symbolize the data.
  • The .lyr file has to be able to find the original
    data!

4
Layer
  • This confusion about layers is caused mainly by
the fact that you can save the symbolized layer
    separately from the Data Layer.
  • If you move a .lyr file to another location it
wont be able to find the spatial data it
references and there will not be happy and
    neither will you!

5
Data Frames
  • Containers for layers
  • A Map can have many data frames
  • Only one can be active at any time
  • You can have as many data frames as you want
but too many make life difficult!
  • Usually use different data frames for different
  • Geographic locations
  • Different parts of a map layout

6
Adding a new Data Frame
  • How?

7
Adding a new Data Frame
  • How?

8
Activate a data frame?
  • Who knows how to do that?

9
Adding new data
  • Where does it get added?

10
Adding new data
  • Where does it get added?
  • TO THE ACTIVE DATA FRAME!
  • So sticking data in the wrong data frame is a
    little booby trap
  • Have to keep in mind which data frame you are
    working with!

11
Thumbnails
  • Pg 26

12
Quick Stats on a Field?
  • In Catalog
  • Preview table
  • Select Field
  • Right Click onField
  • Click Stats

13
Searching in ArcCatalog
  • Now this was something we did not do in 557
  • Pretty handy if you are looking for some specific
data and cant remember what it was called.
  • If you didnt note this do so (pg 28)

14
Booby Trap!
  • What do you have to be careful about when using
the identify tool to see what a features
    attribute data looks like?

15
Booby Trap!
  • What do you have to be careful about when using
the identify tool to see what a features
    attribute data looks like?
  • Remember that the id tool returns data from
whatever data layer is ON TOP at the point where
    you click
  • If you miss, say the road, you will get data from
    the underlying poly layer
  • WATCH FOR THE FLASH!

16
Trick with ID Tool
  • What happens if you hold down the CRTL key as you
    use the ID tool?

17
Trick
  • What happens if you hold down the CRTL key as you
    use the ID tool?
  • The ID window will save the data from the clicks
  • Clicking on the layer in the ID window will flash
    the queried feature

18
Projection on the Fly
  • IF layers have a .prj file associated with them
when brought into ArcMap they will all be
projected to whatever the projection/datum of the
    FIRST layer was.
  • OK
  • If a data layer with no .prj is added ArcMap will
assume that the coordinate values are for the
current projection and stick the layer where you
do not expect it to be.
  • Where or where did my data go?
  • Long/Lat example

19
Booby Trap!
Bummer!
20
Booby Trap!
  • Because Windows will not allow the modification
of any data if it is already in use by another
    application
  • You change a layer in AceToolBox if it is being
    used by ArcCatalog or ArcMap.
  • Have to close the offending application or remove
the layer from the application to solve the
    problem.

21
Symbology
  • Setting ArcMap options

22
Setting Options
  • Control Data View and Layout options
  • Resized window
  • Snapping
  • Ruler units
  • Control of TOC
  • Font
  • Symbol patch size and shap

23
Application Tab
24
Data View Tab
  • Most interesting thing here is the ability to
control what happens to map when you resize the
    window
  • Change scale or not

25
Layout tab
  • This tab allows you to change how the layout
    works
  • Scrollbars or not
  • Horizontal and vertical grids or not
  • Ruler on/off
  • Ruler units, divisions
  • Grid units
  • Snapping

27
Tables Tab
  • Selection color
  • Highlight color
  • Font and size
  • Behavior

28
Raster Tab
  • RGB band combos
  • Pyramid calc
  • Browsing

29
TOC Tab
  • Options for tabs
  • Dispay
  • Source
  • Selection
  • Display options
  • Appearance
  • Patch size and shape

30
TOC Tab - Tabs
  • Display Tab Drawing order
  • Source Tab Sorts layers by where they they are
    stored
  • Selection Tab A very handy view of the data

31
Default
All layers selectable but nothing selected
32
All layers selectable 2 Hydro features selectd 1
muni border selectd
33
Remove layer
Now I cannot Select any of the Hydro layer
features
34
TOC Tab Patch options
35
TOC Selection Tab
  • This particular tab, which I did not know
    existed, can be very handy!
  • Many times I have been trying to select something
but I keep getting things selected in the wrong
    layer
  • Problem solved

36
Speaking of Selecting
  • I have found it a pain in the neck to have to
keep pulling down the Selection Menu to clear
    selections.
  • So I added the clear selection tool to the
    toolbar

37
How?
  • Just like most window applications
  • Right click in the bar area where there are no
    bars
  • Select Customize
  • Select Comands
  • Select Selection commands
  • Find the Clear Selection tool and drag to the
tool bar where you want it
  • Next to the selection tool is a good place

38
Back to Symbolization
  • Quantitative counts, amounts, or ratios
  • Many ways to show differences in attribute
    quantity
  • Graduated symbol
  • Graduate color
  • Multiple attributes
  • Dot Density
  • Charts

39
Map Counts, Amounts
  • Use if you want to show actual measured values as
    well as relative magnitude
  • Can make misleading maps if not careful
  • Sales figures by state may not reflect what you
want unless they are divided by state population.
  • 350,000 wigits in Wyoming would be near 100
while the same number in NY would reflect a small
    percenage.

40
Map Ratios
  • Normalization

41
Map Ranks
  • Ratio data
  • You know 3 is better (or worse) than 1 but you
    dont know how much worse

42
Classification Methods
  • Classification grouping data into chunks
  • Natural Breaks
  • Equal interval
  • Equal area
  • Standard Deviation

43
Classification
  • Right Click, Properties, Symbolization

44
Classify Button
45
Information Sources
  • Text
  • ArcGIS Help
  • Any text on cartography
  • Web

46
Help
47
Styles
  • Styles are the symbols etc. that ArcGIS uses
  • Under Tools/Styles there are three choices
  • Style reference bunch of check boxes for loaded
    styles
  • Style Manager Look at styles or create new
    styles
  • Export Map Styles move styles around

48
Exercises 4.1 4.4
  • For next week
  • You may have to go through the exercises in
Chapters 1-3 before you start this to get the
idea about how he does things
  • The assignment is to
  • Do exercises 4.1 4.4
  • Write a summary of what the various
classification options do and when and when not
    to use them

49
Report
  • Cover sheet with name, Exercise s, date in the
    upper right.
  • You can put anything else you want on the cover
    sheet
  • Final maps from the exercises
  • Summary of classification options
  • Reflection page with Name on back at the upper
    right.
