Task 2

2
Flood Control
  • By Gabriella

3
What does a wetland do?
  • Wetlands help prevent flooding in populated
    areas.
  • They also store and absorb large amounts of water.

4
Why we need them?
  • They act like a giant sponge absorbing water.

5
How do wetlands work?
  • When there is a storm a wetland absorbs a lot of
water so the land doesnt flood.
  • When the water level is low the wetland slowly
    releases water.

6
Water Purification
  • By
  • Gabby

7
What does Water PurificationDo?
  • Wetlands filter out sediment and decomposing
    plant matter from water.
  • Sediment is often a major pollutant in aquatic
    systems.
  • Wetlands reduce sediment by serving as pools
    where sediment can settle.
  • Other pollutants can settle out of the water
column in a wetland, leaving the outgoing water
    cleaner than when it entered.
  • Wetlands can be used to treat waste water,
acting as sinks for nutrients and pollutants.

Migrating Animals
  • By Sam

9
Migrating Animals
  • Here are some animals that migrate African
Elephants, American Buffalo, most of the birds,
some sharks, bats, the Beluga Whale, butterflies,
moths, crabs, Dolphins, Eels, frogs, the Gray
Whale, ladybug, sea turtle, reindeer, salmon,
tuna, the Umbrella bird, and the zebra. ( Thats
    a lot of animals!)

10
Migrating Animals
  • Some animals migrate to the south.
  • Some like the Beluga Whale, is known to migrate
    to the artic oceans.
  • What's the record for the longest migration on
    the planet?
  • The arctic tern flies a phenomenal round trip
that can be as long as 20,000 miles per year,
from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back. Other
sea birds also make astounding journeys the
long-tailed jaeger flies 5,000 to 9,000 miles in
    each direction.

11
Soil Erosion
  • By
  • Savannah

12
How is soil erosion made?
  • Soil erosion is naturally made.
  • The plants around the wetlands help.

13
What do the plants around the wetlands do?
  • The grasses and plants around wetlands make waves
    and other water forces smaller.
  • The roots trap dirt and parts of the land during
    a storm
  • If a wetland is developed erosion can go faster

Farming

Wetlands Reserve ProgramThe Wetlands Reserve
Program is a voluntary program offering
landowners the opportunity to protect, restore,
and enhance wetlands on their property.
16
1996 Farm Bill ProgramsIn 1994 the U.S.
Department of Agriculture was given sole
responsibility for identifying all wetlands on
agricultural land for both Clean Water Act and
Swampbuster programs. The 1996 revisions of the
Farm Bill included modifications to four
incentive programs relating to wetlands.
