Title: Oceanography Field Trip
1Oceanography Field Trip Mission Bay 9 April 2005
Cuyamaca College - Oceanography 112 -
Introduction to Oceanography
2We examined the same location during 3 parts of a
tidal cycle
We measured - depth 2 ways - current Speed -
water clarity - salinity - temperature -
plankton
3Depth was measured 2 ways
Brick on a rope
Results 0820 8.5 m 1019 8.5 m 1213 7.75 m
Do these measurements fit with your expectations
from the tide chart?
Acoustic
Results 0820 27 ft 1019 27 ft 1213 25.5 ft
4Current Measurements
At 0823 we put in 4 drifters, set at 5 m depth, 3
m, 1 m, and 0 m (surface) We lost them all. At
1023 we put in one surface drifter, recovered it
at 1057 At 1219 we put in the surface drifter,
recovered it at 1248
1057
1248
Average drift rates 1023-1057 5.3
m/min 1219-1248 10.1 m/min

What is happening with the temperature and
salinity? Can you offer an explanation?
